MEMPHIS, Tenn., June 6, 2005 – This summer may be a double threat: rust and aphids. But DuPont Crop Protection is armed and ready with DuPont™ Asana® XL insecticide. No one can predict pest infestations for 2005, but what growers do know is this: They will be out scouting weekly, or daily, for rust. This advance knowledge and preparation for soybean rust provides an opportune time to look for aphids as well. “2005 could shape up to be a volatile year for soybean growers. DuPont wants to educate growers on being proactive in their spray approach, for rust and aphids,” said Lars Swanson, DuPont insecticide product manager. “Asana® XL is a great tank-mix partner with fungicides. It offers excellent control of aphids, while requiring only a 21-day preharvest interval. And it shows superior resistance to rain washoff. A properly timed application of Asana® XL could mean the difference in not leaving money on the table this year. Protect your yield potential.” Scouting is imperative for soybean growers across the upper Midwest. Experts recommend the following approach to scouting: Start by the late vegetative stages, walking your fields every day to every week. Look for the physical presence of aphids on the plant, a sap-like secretion; black, sooty mold; and beneficial insects. Also, keep an eye on weather conditions and temperatures. Aphids prefer the same temperatures as soybean plants. Beware of population explosions and, as always, do the talking. “We encourage growers to talk with their local university experts, Extension service agents and local DuPont representatives,” urged Swanson. “Education is the key to staying ahead of the game.” DuPont is a science company.
