Improved Aircraft Fuel Efficiency with the Airbus A380

DuPont™ Nomex® and DuPont™ Kevlar® lightweight, composite materials used to help improve fuel efficiency.

This two minute documentary film follows an Airbus aeronautical engineer who is responsible for folding innovative, lightweight materials into component parts of the Airbus A380.  These incremental reductions in weight, the engineer is able to dramatically reduce the overall mass of the airline – thereby increasing aircraft fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.

The Science Behind Lightweighting

We watch as the engineer diligently folds DuPont™ Nomex® Honeycomb into the wing flaps and the aircraft doors.  This composite materials help provide rigidity and strength per weight greater than that of steel, while still being extremely lightweight.  Thanks in part to the DuPont™ Nomex® and DuPont™ Kelvar® honeycombs, the Airbus A380 burns 20% less fuel than others in the Airbus fleet.

Through this collaboration with DuPont, Airbus has been able to reduce the weight of the new A380, making a huge difference in minimizing aircraft emissions and creating a model for more fuel efficient aircraft design in the future.
