Creating Sustainable Energy in Masdar, Abu Dhabi
While the use of solar technology and energy continues to grow rapidly around the world, comprehensive city-sized applications are not yet mainstream. Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s stunning new sustainable energy development, is a living laboratory dedicated to their goal of having a zero carbon footprint by implementing green technologies on a citywide level.
Masdar’s determination to become the Silicon Valley of clean technology permeates all aspects of the venture. The architecture fuses ancient Arabian cooling techniques such as elevated, narrow winding streets with the latest in rapid transportation — electric shuttles that drive themselves.
To help power this global showcase, Masdar engaged Suntech, the world’s largest producer of silicon solar modules. When it came to manufacturing the thousands of panels required for the landmark project, Suntech turned to DuPont to deliver a number of crucial solar technology components to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability. This collaboration is already yielding results — Masdar is currently consuming only 40% of the energy it is generating, with the excess being delivered into the main Abu Dhabi grid system.
