Marc C. Albertsen, 2011 Lavoisier Medalist
Founding member of Pioneer’s biotechnology research community and champion for bringing the benefits of biotechnology to developing agriculture in Africa.
Marc Albertsen, Senior Research Fellow, at DuPont business Pioneer Hi-Bred, is recognized for his exceptional contributions in reproductive biology and his champion role bringing the benefits of biotechnology to developing agriculture in Africa. As one of the founding members of the Pioneer biotechnology research community, Dr. Albertsen led the establishment of an industry-leading reproductive biology group that has delivered two generations of hybrid seed production technologies (SPT) to the Pioneer corn business. Pioneer is now adapting the latest version of the corn SPT technology to change hybrid production systems in other crops. Looking to the future, Marc is using his expertise and academic network to improve understanding of plant reproduction for potential new products.
In addition, Marc plays an important role leading two of Pioneer’s philanthropic ventures to bring the benefits of biotechnology to African farmers. His role as Principle Investigator for IMAS (Improved Maize for African Soils) focuses on partnerships with CIMMYT (International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center), the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, and USAID (United States Agency for International Development) to improve nitrogen use efficiency for African subsistence agriculture. He also dedicates his time and expertise to the Africa Biofortified Soil (ABS) program, funded by the Howard Buffet foundation, which focuses on improving the nutritional quality of sorghum, a dietary staple in Africa.
In a previous role leading the Pioneer Agronomic Traits research group, Marc’s leadership and creativity had profound impact in establishing the systems we use today. Marc was an inventor on the FAST (Functional Analysis System for Traits) corn concept. Today, Pioneer uses the FAST corn technology to increase our capacity and speed in trait discovery and development. Marc's technical and creative achievements are impacting the business and science of agriculture around the world today and will continue to be invaluable to people around the world for years to come.
