Plant biotechnology combines science and biology to develop plants that have a new trait or characteristic the plant needs, but would not otherwise has. In layman’s terms, that means taking a good or helpful quality, like disease resistance and transferring it into the generic makeup of a crop that is susceptible to that disease. By doing so, we are able to help protect those crops from weeds, insects, disease and extreme weather while also protecting the environment, biodiversity and human health.
Using plant biotechnology allows us to help crops do all kinds of things they couldn't do before, like grow with less water, fight pests at the genetic level and tolerate herbicides so farmers can better control weeds.
