Business cannot be sustainable if the raw materials are not

DuPont Performance Polymers (DPP) consumes thousands of raw materials to make engineering resins for injection molding.  Frequent issues with supply have routinely threatened the ability to deliver finished product.

To address this issue, a strategy was developed to manage the raw material portfolio with the same Product Line Management tools used to manage the Zytel® finished product line.The ingredients used to make Zytel® were organized into numerous discrete Raw Material Groups to assess for functionality in the finished product, product stewardship, cost, and supply chain robustness. This created a multigenerational path forward on hundreds of raw materials that have been woven into the daily fabric of the cross functional business team activities.

As a result, the division of DPP that produces Zytel® polymer is reaping significant benefits and proactively mitigating a number of product stewardship concerns. For instance, the transition from hundreds of products that were single-sourced on various fiberglass grades with environmentally unfavorable ingredients to a small number of “universal” fiberglass grades that could be used interchangeably across the entire product line with great flexibility for competitive advantage.  Other examples include a program to eliminate two flame retardants that had potential sustainability concerns and transition from an expensive stabilizer in short supply to a competitive, not-in-kind stabilizer that is less expensive and much more readily available. Based on the success of this pilot, DPP has elected to expand to other product lines.
