Three SPE Automotive Innovation Awards Enabled by DuPont Transportation & Advanced Polymers

Zytel® resin, Minlon® resin and BETAMATE™ structural adhesives share honors

Wilmington, DE, November 13, 2018 – The Automotive Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers selected three winners – one of which earned top honors – that include DuPont Transportation & Advanced Polymers in their 48th annual Automotive Innovation Awards. Winners include:

  • Vacuum generation system for brake assist on the 2017 Ford F-150 that improves engine efficiency at a reduced weight by using Minlon® 73M30 mineral reinforced nylon resin as a stand-alone vacuum system. Tier supplier is Dayco Product, processor is MacLean-Fogg and the toolmaker is Kaid Tool & Die. This innovation was also named the 2018 Grand Prize winner.

  • Integrated tire carrier, rear camera and brake light assembly for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler made with Zytel® ST801AW polyamide 66 resin that meets camera stability, weatherability and durability requirements at a significant weight savings (85 – 115 lbs) and cost reduction (up to 20%). Tier supplier is TMD-Grammer AG Group, processor and toolmaker is Legerra Technologies.

  • Thermoplastic liftgate for the 2019 Jeep Cherokee replaces a steel liftgate with a new thermoplastic design that enabled a 28% mass reduction and a 50% tooling/capital investment savings. Brackets bonded with BETAMATE™ structural adhesives enabled patent-pending tethering attachments. Tier supplier is Magna International Inc.and Magna Exteriors Belvidere is the processor.

  • Chosen as a finalist, Zytel® 70G33HS1L was utilized on an autonomous milliwave radar bracket for the 2019 Acura RDX, which offered advantages in weight and cost savings as well as integration of pedestrian impact and radar alignment features. Tier supplier, processor and toolmaker is Nifco America Corp.

“The SPE Awards celebrate teamwork,” said Carl Sullivan, market manager for powertrain and thermal solutions, DuPont Transportation & Advanced Polymers. “These winning applications demonstrate the impressive results of collaboration between manufacturers, tiers and materials suppliers. As we look toward the future, which includes autonomous driving, this style of innovation for meeting new challenges will be essential. Our AHEAD initiative is just one example of how we’re moving in this direction and the recognition of the radar bracket and camera assembly demonstrates the value of our material advancements.”

SPE’s Automotive Innovation Awards Program is said to be the oldest and largest competition of its kind in the world. Dozens of teams of OEMs, tier suppliers and polymer producers submit nominations describing their part, system or complete vehicle and why it merits the claim as the Year’s Most Innovative Use of Plastics. Funds raised from this event are used to support SPE educational efforts and technical seminars, which help educate and secure the role of plastics in the advancement of the automobile.
