Teflon® PFA, FEP, and PTFE for Pharmaceutical Applications

Teflon® PFA and Teflon® PTFE for Pharmaceutical Applications

With their excellent chemical and thermal resistance, Teflon® PFA, Teflon® FEP, Tefzel® ETFE, and Teflon® PTFE are ideal for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical processing equipment. Their molecules, which have continuous non-reactive surfaces, are compatible with virtually all chemicals and solvents. And because articles processed from Teflon® PFA, FEP, and PTFE are non-reactive, there are no corrosion byproducts or extractables to contaminate processes.

Teflon® fluoropolymers resist absorption of chemicals. In addition to their higher service temperatures, they are more resistant to chemical attack than conventional chlorinated and hydrocarbon polymers.

  

Superior Cleanability

Teflon® finishes are easy to clean. They provide smooth, non-wetting, hydrophobic surfaces that resist biofilm buildup, and can be used with the strongest cleaning solutions and steam-in-place processes. Also, since they resist buildup of process materials, intervals between cleanings can often be extended.

From heat-shrink FEP and PTFE tubing to ultra-lite PTFE liners with walls as thin as 0.0005", we offer extrusions with outstanding tolerance control, length accuracy, and tubing consistency.

The Material of Choice for PFA-Lined, Large-Diameter

Pipe Fittings

With nearly universal chemical resistance and a smooth surface for excellent cleanability, DuPont™ Teflon® PFA fluoropolymer resin has become an ideal lining in large-diameter pipe fittings for the pharmaceutical industry.

In multi-purpose pharmaceutical plants, process pipework is often required to convey different materials. The exceptionally smooth surface and low wettability of Teflon® PFA assists both cleaning and changeover. The cleanliness of PFA is also a key attribute, particularly during high-purity sulphuric and hydrofluoric acid production. 

Teflon® PFA is a reliable, consistent material for large pipe fittings, having great thermal stability, resistance to stress cracking, and a generally very forgiving character in use. 

The superior permeation performance of Teflon® PFA protects against liner collapse due to permeation and inadequate venting, which can lead to significant plant failures and extended shutdowns.

Among the unique features of Teflon® PFA is the development of the 90-degree elbow. To offer this, DuPont has extended its range of investment in steel castings, creating a one-piece (versus a more usual three-piece) design.
