New Study Confirms the Satiating Effect of Litesse® Polydextrose and its Potential Role in Appetite Control
REIGATE, Surrey, UK, 14 August 2012 – DuPont Nutrition & Health is supporting food manufacturers in the battle against obesity with a soluble fibre and low-calorie speciality carbohydrate that can help to increase satiety and reduce food intake.A number of human studies have documented the satiating effect of Litesse® polydextrose, and demonstrated that it can help consumers to reduce their caloric intake. These results are supported by a new study conducted by the Functional Food Centre of Oxford Brookes University, and published in the European Journal of Nutrition (Eur J Nutr 2012, June 21), which recorded a 10 percent reduction in energy intake at a monitored lunch following consumption of a polydextrose preload 60 minutes prior to the lunch. The study team concluded that polydextrose “has the potential to reduce food intake” and “could be potentially used for appetite control”. Results of a further positive study are expected to be published later this year.
One calorie per gram
Part of the DuPont™ Danisco® ingredient range, Litesse® is a recognised prebiotic fibre that contributes just one calorie per gram and mediates a low glycaemic impact. These factors, combined with its ability to enhance satiety, mean that it can be used to develop innovative foods that are both satisfying and lower in calories.
“Successful weight management is ultimately about balancing the energy we consume as food with the energy that we expend through exercise. Consuming less at mealtimes and selecting less energy dense foods can help individuals to achieve this balance. As Litesse® contains 75% less calories than sugar, increases satiety and helps to reduce the desire to eat, it is an ideal ingredient for reducing sugars and calories in products focused on weight management.” says Michael Bond, health platform leader, DuPont Nutrition & Health.
Flexibility in use
Faced with growing calls to play a more active role in tackling the global obesity epidemic, food manufacturers can retain maximum formulation flexibility when using Litesse®. Available in three grades, this special carbohydrate is suitable for almost all food and beverage applications.
“Litesse® is an extremely straightforward ingredient to formulate with, thanks to its high solubility and stability. It is very well tolerated and has been used in the food industry for over 30 years. It has become a trusted ingredient, recognised for its ability to facilitate nutrition and health claims in a diverse range of food and beverage applications, without negatively impacting taste and texture and therefore end product appeal” says Michael.
DuPont™ Danisco® is the brand for a range of products that help provide enhanced bioprotection, an improved nutritional profile and better taste and texture with greater cost efficiency and lower environmental impact, meeting the needs of manufacturers of food and beverages, dietary supplements and pet food. Through the work of the global network of food scientists and technologists in DuPont, the Danisco® range is supported by a uniquely broad spectrum of know-how across applications and processing. www.danisco.com
