New Expansion Shortens Sample Production Timelines, Reduces Costs and Increases Quality.

Substantial enhancements to DuPont Nutrition & Health’s (DuPont) probiotic production suite in Madison, Wisconsin, now enable greater efficiency with clinical investigational product and customer sample production.

The expansion and enhancement project creates a nimbler production process, giving DuPont full control over the development of clinical trial material in multiple formats, including capsules, sachets and, eventually, tablets. The ability to oversee the entire production process enables DuPont to work even more closely with its customers to create custom formulations for their products.

“These improvements significantly expand our application knowledge and sample production capacity,” said Connie Sindelar, Probiotic development manager, DuPont Nutrition & Health. “One of our goals for building the suite was to be able to mimic the full-scale production of our finished probiotic products at our contract manufacturers’ facilities.”

By eliminating the need for a third-party vendor and related lead time, the new Madison production suite creates smoother processing and production of samples – shortening production timelines and reducing costs. All products made in the suite are produced in accordance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Current Good Manufacturing Practices guidelines. The suite is FDA regulated and inspected.

The enhancements to the facility include a sachet packaging machine, which increased DuPont Nutrition & Health’s sample format capability. To enable small-scale custom blend manufacture, a lab scale blender also was installed. Capsules also can be made at lab scale and packaged into bottles or blister packaging for direct delivery to customers.

Earlier this month, DuPont announced a substantial upgrade to its probiotics pilot development lab at its facility also in Madison. The $10 million investment strengthens and emboldens DuPont’s current position as a leader in the probiotics industry, allowing for increased pace of product development, and significantly improved delivery times on pilot material for clinical trials and customer evaluations.
