Healthy Aging Made Possible with New Food Concepts for Seniors

DuPont introduces “Smart Aging” at Health Ingredients Japan, October 4-6, booth 3-125.  

Japan is the most aged society globally with more than a quarter of the population aged 65 and above. This trend is increasing rapidly due to low fertility rate and decades of improved life expectancy. As the country ages, extension of healthy life expectancy is of particular interest and importance.

Healthy aging, smart eating

As a person grows older, various functions of the body, such as muscles, organs, and immunity will weaken. The Japanese government is committed to extend healthy life expectancy to improve the health of seniors in the country, listing it as a top national healthcare priority. In response to this movement, DuPont Nutrition & Health has developed the “Smart Aging’ initiative, which suggests that while health deterioration is inevitable as one ages, life expectancy can be enhanced by leading a healthier, and happier life through consuming food that meets the dietary habits and needs of the senior. This new notion considers not only physical factors but also mental factors, such as a decline in motivation in everyday life, and environmental factors such as decreasing social connection.

DuPont Nutrition & Health has conducted a qualitative research to better understand and meet the needs of seniors in Japan. A total of 11 bakery, dairy, beverages, dietary supplements and confectionary prototypes were developed based on the survey insights and concept acceptance test, and will be introduced at the upcoming Heath Ingredients (Hi) Japan. Visitors at Hi Japan will be able to sample these appealing and tasty prototypes containing DuPont™ Danisco® ingredients including HOWARU® Protect Senior, SUPRO® soy protein and Litesse® polydextrose, that are senior-friendly and healthy.
