2006 DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation Winners

A ceremony was held at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, to celebrate the winners from the 19th DuPont Awards Competition, which honors innovation in packaging. Sponsored by DuPont Packaging the competition honors innovation in food processing and packaging across the supply chain - from technology and processes to equipment and converters to the end-use packagers.

Evaluating this year's 135 entries, an 8-member judging panel considered criteria such as material specification of the package structure, marketplace acceptance, impact on consumers, function, improvement from current packaging, and the degree of design, engineering or technical innovation. Twenty-six international food and non-food packaging innovations received awards. Among those honored, the winners deemed most innovative by the judging panel received the prestigious Diamond Award.

And the winners were ...

GOLD AWARD WINNERS

Amcor PET Packaging - USA; Tradewinds Beverage Company - USA

PowerFlex™, produced by Amcor PET Packaging, is the first truly panel-free and rib-free PET container that accommodates hot filling up to 185°F. The use of vacuum panels for hot-fillable PET containers, while accepted industry practice, has held back PET from penetrating premium beverage markets. Amcor developed an ingenious, patented base design that handles the vacuum while keeping the sidewalls free of ribs and panels. The base incorporates a unique diaphragm that draws upward as the liquid cools. The rib-free, panel-free sidewalls create a container with a premium look and feel as well as provide maximum freedom for label size, material and application. Unlike other PET containers on the market, PowerFlex™ may be filled on any heat set line and needs no special handling or accommodation.

Group 4 - USA; Sherwin-Williams - USA

Ready to Roll combines a paint container and well-conceived roller tray in one easy-to-use package that is a no-mess, re-sealable and ultimately recyclable solution. Nearly every section of the new container exhibits innovative features, and when taken together, they represent a dramatic change in the way DIY painting projects are planned and performed. The integration of a roller tray into the paint container alone represents a major innovation -- relieving the need to transfer paint to and from a separate tray, reducing spills, and saving paint and time. The tray itself is thoughtfully designed with drain holes and roller ribs to keep paint contained in the bucket and to make the rolling process more effective and efficient. The integrated pour spout and interior paint well ensures that for all practical purposes all paint is used or recovered and directed to any secondary containers without the paint runoff found down the side of a traditional paint can.

The overall size, volume and shape are calculated to reflect the use, transport, handling, and storage of paint during a typical paint project. The injection-molded plastic form is stable, compact, doesn't roll around in the back of a car, and is easy to carry. It includes an oversized carry handle for comfort and a recessed grip on the underside to facilitate pouring. The container lid and base form are shaped to accommodate stacking for shipping and retail display and the squared shape increases consumer communication opportunities and presents a neater facing on-shelf. Equally important to the design is the innovative, re-closable tinting port as well as the way the package is shaped to fit standard paint shaking machines, enabling retailers to match a full range of colors.

Heinz North America - USA; Product Ventures Ltd. - USA; Graham Packaging - USA; Seaquist Closures - USA

This novel bottle and closure system was designed to provide consumers with a significantly more convenient means of storing, handling, and dispensing ketchup from large size containers (46 oz. and 64 oz.) than with conventional designs. The package is designed to easily fit on the door shelves of refrigerators while providing consumers with ergonomic grip points for handling and dispensing ketchup.

The bottle is capped with a custom designed closure offering a lock-back feature for improved dispensing control and cleanliness. The flip-top feature replicates the distinctive Heinz Keystone - a core brand equity of the Heinz Company for over 100 years. The packaging was designed via a novel process juxtaposing in-home/in-store ethnography studies and focus groups with a cross-functional team including Industrial Designers, Marketing, R&D, and Manufacturing. Design concepts were refined and optimized based on consumer feedback through central location and in-home usage testing. As a result of this process, the patent pending package design is preferred 70:30 versus conventional designs.

Kraft Foods Inc. - USA; Sonoco Products Company - USA; Spear USA - USA

Snack 'n Seal is a patented packaging system that provides consumers with resealability, ease of opening and increased product freshness. The package consists of a thermoformed tray in a horizontal flow wrap, which incorporates an innovative re-close feature to the top panel. The feature consists of a precision die-cut opening to which a pressure-sensitive label is applied. The label is grasped at the "Lift here" tab and peeled back, thus revealing the opening. The consumer can then access the cookies and reclose the package without having to open the end seals. The package contains a widely used high-barrier film structure with technology that had only formerly been used for baby and home care wipes.

RPC beauté - France

The cap is the main innovation in the Lancôme - Color Fever lipstick case. Bi-injected and then electroplated in Shiny White Bronze finish, the cap's materials are selected in such a way that the cap is translucent and metallic looking, with a crisp frontier and a high quality look.

The bi-injected / partially plated solution developed by Risdon requires a complete mastering of the bi-injection and overmolding processes, and of the electroplating process. In addition, it requires an ability to define the almost appropriate resin to fulfill highly specific constraints. The resulting package allows for greater esthetics, quality and ease of use at a more affordable price.

RPC beauté - France

By tampo-printing a layer of silver ink to the top of the cap using a special ink containing metallic pigments, RPC beauté was able to create a plate backing in a silver mirror-like finish, visible through the clear DuPont™ Surlyn® resin, without any visible glue or fixation mode. In addition, because the fragrance caps are heavy and require a long cycle time, RPC beauté met production capacity specified by Lancôme by implementing a proprietary technique that reduces the cycle time of massive parts made of Surlyn®, which subsequently reduces by the same proportion the number of molds and machines involved.

SILVER AWARD WINNERS

Alcoa Packaging - USA

The shrink sleeve is the most demanded label currently in the market place because of the label's ability to fit interestingly molded, contoured containers while conveying brand image in a significant manner. Alcoa improved the graphics for more shelf impact and developed an "anti-wet" overcoat to virtually eliminate the appearance of air bubbles that could become trapped between the label and glass and be visible within the clear portion of the label. PETG film was chosen because of the severe differences in shrink diameter down the length of the product profile.

Amcor Flexibles Drammen - Norway; Amcor Flexibles Otto Nielsen - Denmark

Amcor FlexCan is an easy open and recloseable, stand-up container making it ideal for products that are typically not finished in one serving or use. A special peelable lapseal PE makes it easy to open and an adhesive tape provides recloseability. A wide opening makes it easy for the consumer to get a handful of nuts directly from the pack, or pour some of the contents into a bowl. The design allows the packaging to be printed on all sides, including the bottom and top, and it allows for easy opening/closing, with a recloseable flap keeping the product fresh.

Amore Pacific - Korea

The world's first automated electronically rotating mascara converges the technology of electronics and the technology of cosmetic packaging. The new mascara also overcame the stereotype that the mascara brush should be made of nylon fibers and opened a new era for rubber as an applicator for makeup tool. A coil-type "rubber brush" was developed to enhance the application of mascara by rotation. Rubber brush makes the consumers feel reassured of the rotating electronic device and is designed to prevent eyelashes to be drawn out during application.

The sleek, lightweight, flexible pouch allows customers to squeeze out the precise amount of product they want, for more efficient application than the traditional screw top or pump bottles. Clear windows on the front and back of the pouch offer the opportunity for precise color selection in store. The pouch also collapses to enable the consumer to squeeze the last contents out and decreases in volume as the product is used.

Flex Industries Ltd. - India

With two side gussets and one bottom gusset, Ankur Lo Sodium Salt stands out on the shelf. The side gusset is made transparent so that the consumer can see the product before purchase. The pouch is made from five different webs - the front and back and the two side gussets are registered. The format can be adjusted for products such as rice, snack foods, etc.

Graham Packaging Company - USA Martinelli Company - USA; VBS/Cryotech International Inc. - USA

This new technical development breaks the paradigm for hot fill beverage products in two ways. First, it eliminates the need for conventional vacuum panels and supporting rib structures. Second, it is the first successful attempt at employing liquid nitrogen to purge the container headspace and pressurize a hot fill beverage container.

Healthy Fx - Canada; Wavequick Technologies Ltd. - Taiwan

This 5-layer film expands when heated to allow built-up pressure and steam to escape through multiple micro-pores in one layer of the film's composition. The film is airtight and will go directly from the freezer or refrigerator into the microwave without having to vent or slit the packaging material. This single-use material acts like a pressure cooker that cooks faster and naturally retains more minerals, vitamins and moisture in the food product.

Smart Lid Systems - Australia

The color changing disposable coffee cup lid is manufactured with color changing additives, which react with heat. The lid is a coffee bean brown in its "cold" state, and as it comes in contact with steam or direct contact with hot liquids it changes color to a "hot" red, resulting in the operation of the three distinct features of the lid:

  1. Visual warning system to customers that their drink may be hot;
  2. Demonstration of whether the lid has been correctly applied or not; and
  3. Provides for a branding or advertising medium to be put on top of the lid and text, logos and pictures that appear and disappear with heat change.

The technical innovation for the color changing lid technology was the creation of a set of contrasting colors using the current popular manufacture process. The manufacture process, adapting traditional methods on widely used machinery, has successfully yielded color contrasts between the "cold" and "hot" colors never previously attained using thin substrates.

Tetra Pak - Switzerland/Sweden

A unique wedge-shaped carton, the Tetra Wedge™ Aseptic Microwaveable 200 S is designed to heat either sweet or savory sauces in microwave ovens. Consumer studies have proven it is sturdier and easier to handle and pour from than stand-up plastic pouches typically used to heat ready-made sauces. The package provides brand owners with the ability to offer high product quality and tastes, protected ingredients, shelf stability and no need for preservatives. It offers the same values to consumers as they take the product home and store it in their cupboard. The core innovation uses PET film coated with a plasma deposition of SiOx imbedded in a paper laminate to enable microwaving of high quality culinary sauces and still have the package comfortable to hold and serve even with hot contents. It is one of the most sustainable microwaveable packages on the market with over 70 percent of content made with renewable materials.

SPECIAL CITATIONS

During the final review of the entries the panel of judges agreed that the following seven packaging entries be awarded a Special Citation for a specific achievement in packaging. They are:

Alcan Packaging - Medical Flexibles Americas - USA

The high-barrier terminal steam sterilization package comprises a top web, lidding or pouch front web, and a bottom web or pouch back web. The top web features a unique peelable heat seal system, which provides hermetic product protection with the convenience of consistent easy opening after sterilization. In order to optimize cold forming in the bottom web, a highly extensible aluminum foil lamination was developed with a sealing surface that is compatible with the peelable top web. This ensures high durability and maximum thickness throughout the package for barrier protection of the product.

Bemis Flexible Packaging - USA; Masterfoods USA - USA

UPCs are printed in the transverse direction (TD) and print copy is located within view, from all angles on the Snickers bar wrap. The development of these technologies was a 2-year process involving multiple trials both on press and on the packaging line. Enormous amounts of data were collected to validate the consistency of TD-printed UPCs. The effort resulted in a package which met the brand's need but did not compromise UPC integrity or packaging line speed. The ability to increase branding "real estate" on a package will be significant to brand managers across the industry.

Metaphase Design Group - USA; Solo Cup Company - USA

The side walls of the plates were designed with ultimate functionality in mind. The steepness of the side walls provides rigidity and creates a solid feel and confidence in the hand. The steep side walls also help to keep food from spilling over the sides of the plate and assist in loading food onto a spoon or fork. Also, a first in plate design, the curved side walls on either side of the grip areas are designed to match the contour of standard spoons.

The Paper Products Ltd. - India

This technical innovation included designing and developing a complex customized hologram, which would be a trademark of authentication for customers to purchase the genuine products. This involved fusion of three unique technologies of specialty cartons, flexibles laminates, and holograms - to produce a liner carton that would have the security hologram visible from a window in a designated place.

The Paper Products Ltd. - India

The sleeve was designed in a manner that the promo message was hidden and was tamper evident for ensuring its genuineness. The promo patch on the sleeve was designed to be removable so that it could be sent to the product manufacturer for redemption. The perforation provided to the patch was also registered so that the sleeve remained intact on the container. Also, for larger prizes there had to be a way of checking its authenticity for redemption. Therefore the design accounted for UV readable ink print with a special signature to be put on high denomination prize patches.

Seufert Transparente Verpackungen GmbH - Germany; Folienwerk Wolfen GmbH - Germany

The new material and shape for the Nestle Box includes transparent packaging for the chocolates to better attract consumers. The upper seal is designed in such a way that it consists of four identical latches ensuring effortless packing and removal of its high-quality contents.

The complete package redesign of Suave hair care shampoo & conditioner is a combination of design, technical and environmental innovations. The curvatures of the design throughout the bottle improve the overall strength, which allows light weighing. The bottle-to-bottle contact points suggest a round bottle shape, which supports manufacturing efficiencies. Aesthetically, the bottle is curvy, beautiful and strengthens the Suave brand image. This package is a healthy combination of being consumer, manufacturing, and environmentally friendly.
