Toray-DuPont to Build New Facility; Increase Production of DuPont™ Kapton® in Japan

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, June 20, 2003 - DuPont Electronic Technologies has announced plans to expand its DuPont™ Kapton® polyimide film manufacturing facility with Toray-DuPont Company, its joint venture with Toray Industries, Japan. The new facility will add a fourth production line for Kapton® to serve the rapidly growing flexible circuit industry in the region.

The expansion will be adjacent to the existing Toray-DuPont manufacturing site for Kapton® in Tokai City, Japan. Construction will begin in June, with commercial production scheduled to begin by early 2005. Demand for Kapton® in Japan has been growing steadily with existing applications, as well as new adoptions of chip-on-flex (COF) technologies. The new production line will increase annual output of Kapton® by 60% from the current 1100 tons. Toray-DuPont production of Kapton® in Japan began in 1985 with a single manufacturing line. A second line was added in 1989 and the third in 1998.

"This expansion represents another major milestone in a regularly paced pattern of growth for Toray-DuPont in Japan," said Dave Miller, vice president and general manager, DuPont Electronic Technologies. "It also is a tangible example of our commitment to regional customers by investing in the local production and distribution of Kapton® polyimide film, versus importing it from outside the area."

Kapton® is the DuPont brand of temperature-resistant polyimide film. It is used primarily as a substrate for flexible printed circuits and integrated circuit applications in wireless, digital and computer markets. Toray-DuPont is a 50-50 joint venture between Toray Industries, Inc., Tokyo, and DuPont KK, Japan, a wholly owned subsidiary of DuPont, Wilmington, Del.. The entity has produced Kapton® for the Asia-Pacific flexible circuit industry since 1985.

DuPont Electronic Technologies is a $1 billion business unit that consists of eight businesses dedicated to the electronics industry, including printed circuit materials, high-performance and micro-circuit materials, semiconductor fabrication materials and IC packaging and interconnects.
