Shipping Containers
Anhydrous methylamines are shipped in pressuretype tank cars, tank trucks, and ISO tanks. Tank cars used are Department of Transportation (DOT) specification 105 and 112 with thermal protection and are available in 20, 25, and 30 thousand gallon nominal sizes. Tank trucks are DOT specification MC-331 and are filled to 38,000 lb maximum load. ISO tanks are DOT specification 51 with a net weight of 27,000 pounds.
DOT regulations limit the maximum net weight of liquefied gases carried by tank cars to a certain percentage of the weight of water that can be carried. Also, each size and type of car has a maximum gross weight rating that may limit the net weight shipped. The nominal weights shipped in the three sizes of anhydrous methylamine tank cars are 110, 130, and 150 thousand pounds, but the actual weight shipped may vary a small percentage from this amount. Aqueous methylamines are shipped in tank cars (20 and 30 thousand gallon nominal sizes), tank trucks, and ISO tanks.
The DOT Hazard Class for anhydrous methylamines is FLAMMABLE GAS. The hazard class for aqueous methylamines is FLAMMABLE LIQUID, CORROSIVE.6 UN numbers are listed below. See the MSDS for additional information.
