DuPont Performance Building Solutions & Corian® Design: Ready to Build the Future

Press Release | March 15, 2024

There’s no place like home, and our home is changing. Living in a world just 1 degree warmer has shown us that homes and buildings need to be more resilient in the face of extreme weather. But it is not enough to merely react to climate change, we need to act on climate now, more than ever

The IPCC estimates that limiting global temperature increase to 1.5°C will require that we cut emissions in half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. To put it in perspective, a 1.5°C increase means an ice free artic every 100 summers, while a 2°C increase means 10 times that, an ice free Artic every 10 years. That half a degree difference would mean the end of coral reefs and double the loss of habitat for plants insects and other wildlife. From record breaking heat waves, to increased ocean temperatures, we are already seeing the effects of global temperature increase, which is why we must take action.

The kind of sweeping collaboration, commitment, and innovation this will require is unprecedented. With the Built Environment being responsible for nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, we know that we have a massive responsibility to tilt the scales. We must work together to achieve our common goal of a livable planet, and a healthy future for everyone. So how do we get there?

Our plan needs to be strategic and actionable. To tilt the scales of climate change, we know that we must build above code and adopt net zero building codes going forward. We need to leverage the tools and technologies that we already have. This means using more efficient lighting, and more efficient heating and cooling systems, more green roofs, heat pumps, smart glass, smart thermostat, and of course proper insulation, for both new builds and renovations. This is why DuPont™ Performance Building Solutions and Corian® Design places a large emphasis on driving progress by leading change, improving performance, building relationships, and advocating for more stringent building codes.

To tackle embodied carbon, we need manufacturers to drive the innovation of scalable low carbon and carbon regenerative materials. Making good use of the embodied carbon already emitted means opting for the retrofit of existing building stock over new builds.

Our industries commitment is critical, as the UN projects 2.6 trillion sqft of building space will be added over the next 40 years. If we were to continue building as we have in the past, we’d be contributing to temp increases of 4-8 degrees Celsius between now and the end of the century. But were not continuing business as usual. We are laying a new foundation, expanding our tools as we go, and adapting our plan as needed. As an industry that is not afraid of hard work, we must commit to innovating the products necessary to limit global temperature increase to 1.5°C as if our future depends on it, because it does.
