How does the manager at one of the oldest pools in Pennsylvania
maintain the highest standards on a limited budget at a heavily
used facility? He depends on DuPont™ Oxone® pool and spa oxidizer
to achieve superior water quality.

Clarity begins with a “Y.
Since 1889, the YWCA in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has provided a
caring place for women to develop their aptitudes, skills and talents.
In 1920, the Y built a 50,000-gallon indoor pool, using the best
technology available at that time. It was sanitized with chlorine
to protect bathers from infectious diseases. Today, the Y serves
more than 20,000 people in the community annually through a variety
of programs and services. During a typical day, the pool handles
more than 100 swimmers, from water exercise classes in the morning
to afternoon open swim time for children.

Something in the air
When Jeff Brown joined the YWCA as building manager in 1998, he
recognized immediately that chronic problems in the pool area had
to be remedied. The water clarity was always below normal and there
were strong chloramine odors in the air. Jeff learned about DuPont™
Oxone® and its benefits from a pool industry journal. When he tried
it, he noticed that chloramine odors were greatly reduced. He also
decided to discontinue the common practice of superchlorinating
the pool to correct chemical imbalances.
“DuPont™ Oxone® pool and spa oxidizer
has helped us develop a highly cost-effective and easy-to-maintain
pool care program, says Brown. “This has become critical for us
since we operate on a tight budget and don't have a lot of time
to devote to any single facet of running such a large facility.
We can't afford high-tech equipment and instrumentation, so Oxone®
is a simple, fairly foolproof system.
