DuPont Opens Global Paving Center in Prague
Existing Center Upgraded to Serve Global Asphalt Producers and Road Construction Customers Globally
Prague, Czech Republic – March 19, 2014. DuPont today officially announced the inauguration of the Global Paving Center (GPC) in Prague. Previously focused on bitumen modifications for asphalt producers and road construction customers in the Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, the Center has now been upgraded with state of the art equipment to enable advanced testing and tailor-made support for customers with diverse requirements all across the world.
“Since 2009 when it first opened, this Center has provided consultancy services to more than 80 refineries in more than 40 countries, thus contributing to the significant performance improvement of asphalt concrete for customers in the EMEA region. The unique expertise in road paving processes and products accumulated in the center for the last five years will now be leveraged with other regions”, said Thomas Oury, EMEA Director for DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers. “As part of the DuPont Global network of competency centers, the team of scientists & technical experts of the GPC will support our clients & sales teams around the globe with their unique know-how and state of the art facilities, connected with the DuPont global knowledge network”,continued Oury.
The Global Paving Center employs 10 experts, including 5 scientists with unique expertise in road paving processes and products. The Center provides testing, technical and legislation consulting for the asphalt producers, road construction and refining industry. Since 2009, the Center has contributed to many success stories and has proven its expertise in the application of DuPont™ Elvaloy® in very demanding applications and climates ranging from fuel resistant airports and sea ports in the Nordics and Siberia, through to highways sustaining the heat of the Sahara and the Gulf region to the heavy loaded roads of South Africa.
Among the recent successes, is the recent installation of a state-of-the art Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) plant in Ghana with the biggest total blending capacity of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. The plant has the capability to pave up to 660km of surface roads with DuPont technologies every year, making Ghana’s roads safer and helping protect thousands of commuters everyday.
“DuPont has invested in laboratory and expertise here in Prague to provide our customers with the technical services and support to improve their operations and ultimately the quality of their road surfaces. We are determined to leverage the expertise concentrated here in Prague on a global scale and to incorporate the Center into a network of centers of competency around the globe,” says Luigi Robbiati, Vice President Communications, Marketing and Sales EMEA & Regional Director Western and Central Europe.
“The team of the Paving Center experts is not only developing PMB formulations; its main goal is to understand and identify customer needs and assist in creating holistic solutions reflecting the complexity of road design, construction and chemistry of bitumen modification that is specific for each country and region. DuPont Paving Specialists are also assisting our customers at their production sites, providing valuable technology and processing guidance,” describes Lukas Bartek, Sales & Marketing, Manager DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers ECEMEA.
The center is also a recipient of the prestigious Czech Innovation Award (Silver Medal) for the best collaboration between academia and the corporate sector during 2011. The honor recognizes development work between DuPont and the Czech Technical University in the field of new and innovative technical solutions in road construction, including the use of reclaimed plastic waste from packaging and automotive waste (based on ethylene copolymers) in asphalt composites. The application of such composite materials can potentially save between 30 to 100% of bituminous binders and therefore can significantly reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.
