Toughened Nylon: At Your Service with DuPont Impact Modifier
DuPont offers several polymer impact modifier technologies that can be used for toughened nylon. These technologies typically combine increased low-temperature impact properties, with good adhesion to the nylon. The adhesion is achieved by the reaction of amine or carboxylic acid end-groups of the nylon polymer with the functional group of the tougheners.
Multi-Level Toughening Capability
DuPont modifiers can be used to make nylon compounds just a little tougher, or a lot tougher. Performance ranges are typically defined as follows:
- General-purpose toughness – providing impact strength measured by notched Izod test of about 100 to 210 J/m or about 2 to 4 ft-lb/in. at test temperature.
- Intermediate toughness – providing impact strength measured by notched Izod test of about 160 to 320 J/m or about 3 to 6 ft-lb/in. at test temperature.
- Super toughness – resulting in no break in the notched Izod test, with impact strength typically greater than 800 J/m or greater than 15 ft-lb/in.at the test temperature.
