Description:

This seminar, organized in 3 sections, will help you understand the impact of air leakage on building enclosure performance and the importance of air leakage control.

  1. The first section will review the impact of air leakage on building enclosure performance. Since air leakage can transport heat, moisture and contaminants it can impact energy efficiency, durability and comfort of building occupants.
  2. Second section will review the main requirements for a continuous air barrier, which include air infiltration resistance, continuity, structural integrity and durability. Vapor permeability is also an important feature that must be considered.
  3. The last section will review the most recent advances in air leakage control. Energy codes have only recently introduced quantitative standards for air leakage control which include requirements for air barrier materials, assemblies or whole building. The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has pioneered an air barrier program for building enclosure airtightness which requires blower door test for whole building airtightness. This program is now more broadly adopted. The seminar will include examples of successful implementation of whole building airtightness.

Learning Objectives: After attending this seminar, you will be able to understand

  1. The impact of air leakage on building envelope performance
  2. Recent code changes in air leakage control and air barrier standards
  3. Requirements for continuous air barriers
  4. The most recent advances in air leakage control, e.g. blower door test for whole building airtightness.

Target Audience:

Architects, Design Professionals, Specifiers, Owners, Contractors, Code Officials, Building Envelope Consultants, and Students. This program meets every experience level with time designed into the program for questions and answers.
