Implementing Process Safety Management Systems
Our expert consultants take a collaborative approach to helping you manage risk within your organization. We work closely with you – from risk assessment to program implementation – to help prevent incidents, reduce operational risk and maximize results.
DSS has drawn upon our experience across over 240 DuPont locations, and our external consulting experience with a wide range of companies in hazardous industries across the world, to identify the following factors as critical to the successful implementation of a PSM system.
1. Operational rigor or discipline:
In compliance with industry regulations, many companies have reasonably mature process safety standards and procedures that form a part of its overall managing systems. While the managing systems and standards serve as an excellent vehicle for codifying technology, best practices and experience, the bigger challenge is to ensure that all levels of the company apply these standards in their day-to-day operations.
Based upon our experience, DSS strongly believes that operational rigor in implementation leads to improved results. The biggest challenge in achieving operational rigor is what has been called “normalization of deviations.” This usually occurs when what begins as a one-time or temporary departure from prescribed procedure, fails to result in negative consequences and thus, becomes accepted practice. DSS can help your company instill rigor and discipline into your operations for improved results.
2. Risk Based Approach:
Every company has limited resources, and in order to achieve the desired end-state of its business objectives, every company has to prioritize risks. A structured risk-based approach will help prevent catastrophic incidents and in turn, support continuity of the business and the company’s business objectives. This approach can be achieved by institutionalizing a risk based culture within the company that focuses on building foundational knowledge and skills, particularly in the area of “operational risks”. DSS can help your company design and implement a differentiated risk approach that ensures that money, time and effort are allocated based on level of risk and provides a good return on investment.
3. Learning and development:
A rapidly aging workforce; the lack of skilled workforces within the process and extractive industries; increasingly stringent local employment requirements; and an increased reliance on contractors to perform specialized tasks are all contributing factors to declining institutional knowledge and increased operational risks. While most companies understand this challenge, a significant amount of money has been spent on training, without follow-up to build the required skills. It may be more effective to spend more time on coaching and skill building through on-the-job application to achieve better results. DSS can help you identify critical roles and functions and develop competencies that can help sustain the skills internally.

Promoting Safety in Production Processes
The management of process safety and operational risk is a great opportunity for companies to predict and control the risks in their operations and production processes. Many CEO's have said that what keeps them awake at night is the possibility of a "serious incident" that could bring down a company. Srinivasan Ramabhadran, Global Leader of Process Safety Management and Operational Risks, speaks to Vias Expeciales about this topic.
