Verimark™, Exirel™ Early Season Insect Control: Yield, Quality

EPA registration of Verimark™ and Exirel™ insect control provide new technology solutions from DuPont for early season insect control to help growers improve crop yield and quality.

WILMINGTON, Del., Jan. 30, 2014 – Fruit, vegetable and citrus growers today have new solutions to help them achieve greater profitability through better yields and higher-quality produce. DuPont Verimark and Exirel insect control have received federal registration approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); state registrations are in process. Each product offers new technology to help protect crops against damaging insects and pest-vectored diseases that threaten the U.S. produce industry.

“When used early in the crop life cycle, these products help protect a grower’s crop production investments and help deliver improved profitability and productivity,” said James Hay, business director, North America, DuPont Crop Protection. “Verimark and Exirelare the latest examples of how DuPont collaborates with specialty crop growers in the United States and around the world to bring solutions that improve their opportunity for higher yields and improved fruit and vegetable quality at harvest.”

DuPont Crop Protection products provide growers maximum flexibility and enable them to tailor integrated pest management (IPM) programs to meet their specific regional crop needs. Verimark is the soil-applied formulation, while Exirel is a foliar-applied product. Both are powered by Cyazypyr, a single active ingredient that provides a new mode of action for cross-spectrum control of sucking and chewing pests, including thrips, whiteflies and psyllids.

When used for early season insect control, Verimark and Exirel help deliver improved crop quality and yield. For example:

  • In mature/bearing citrus, Exirel applied at the spring and summer flush in large plot demonstration studies at four Florida grove locations, increased yield of total pounds of fruit by an average of 13.7 percent over the grower standard insect control program.  (Source: 2011-2012, DuPont Demonstration Field Trials, Immokalee, Fla.)
  • When applied to fresh market tomatoes in Immokalee, Myakka, Parrish and Vero Beach, Fla., Verimark provided an average 15 percent yield increase 60 percent of the time. (Source: 2012, DuPont large plot replicated and demonstration field trials.)
  • Shank applications of Verimark™ on cantaloupes in Yuma, Ariz., provided 45 to 66 percent higher yield advantage. (Source: 2011, Yuma, Ariz.)
  • In Georgia cucurbits, Verimark tray drench application on Yellow Pride squash provided higher average yield at each of three harvests: 300 pounds per acre higher yield than the grower standard in the first harvest; 1,500 pounds per acre higher yield than the grower standard in the second harvest; 2,000 pounds per acre higher yield than the grower standard in the third harvest. Products powered by Cyazypyr also have been registered by the EPA under its Reduced Risk Pesticide Program for all labeled crops and have short worker reentry and preharvest intervals.

Verimark and Exirel are the latest advancements from DuPont Crop Protection. The company has been recognized with 16 Agrow Awards, including the 2013 Best R&D Pipeline Award. As the second active ingredient in the anthranilic diamide class of chemistry, Cyazypyr™ was discovered and developed by DuPont. The first active ingredient in the class was Rynaxypyr®, which powers DuPont Altacor®, Coragen® and Prevathon® insect control, offering rapid, long-lasting control of damaging lepidopteran pests.

The EPA registered label contains the statement, “DuPont™ Exirel™ is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment on blooming crops or weeds. Do not apply this product or allow to drift to blooming crops or weeds if bees are foraging the treatment area.” State registrations for DuPont™ Verimark™ and Exirel™ insect control are pending.
