Recommendation for Lannate® Brands Insecticides & Vydate® L Insecticide/Nematicide to Help Control the Expanding Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Population
WILMINGTON, Del., May 13, 2011 ― DuPont™ Lannate® SP and Lannate® LV insecticides can now be used to control brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) infestations in the mainland United States (except in Texas, California and New Hampshire) on selected fruit, vegetable and grain crops. Additionally, DuPont™ Vydate® L insecticide/nematicide can be used for BMSB control in 19 states on selected fruit and vegetable crops. DuPont Crop Protection (DuPont) has issued Section 2(ee) recommendations for Lannate® brands and Vydate® L in accordance with the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).
While BMSB is not included on the list of pests controlled by Lannate® and Vydate® L on their current product labels, the 2(ee) recommendations provide growers and applicators with guidelines for using these products to control populations of the BMSB.
BMSB was imported to the United States from Asia and was first detected in Pennsylvania in 1998. Because BMSB has few natural predators and many plant hosts, populations have climbed exponentially. Both immature and adult BMSB feed on a broad range of fruit, vegetable and grain crops, causing significant yield loss and damage that potentially renders crops unmarketable as fresh produce. Industry experts are urging growers to prepare for 2011 as the worst year yet for BMSB infestations and damage.
“Last year, many apple growers lost significant income because their crops were diverted from fresh markets to processed and juice market production due to brown marmorated stink bug damage,” said John Chrosniak, regional director, North America – DuPont Crop Protection. “This year, we anticipate Lannate® brands and Vydate® L, when used with good insect resistance management practices, will help control BMSB populations. With these additional tools, we hope growers can maintain yields and fruit quality, while reducing the level of economic losses they suffered from this pest in the past.”
Chrosniak added that DuPont insect control specialists recommend growers maintain their foundational IPM strategy throughout the growing season, while closely monitoring crops for BMSB infestations.
Lannate® brands and Vydate® L are available for use on selected fruit, vegetable and grain crops in areas with potential for losses due to BMSB. For a complete list of states and crops included in the 2(ee) recommendations and other information, visit lannate.dupont.com and vydate.dupont.com.
While managing the BMSB threat, growers are advised to maintain their foundational IPM strategy throughout the growing season. DuPont offers a full portfolio of insect control products, including DuPont™ Altacor® insect control. Altacor® protects crops from biting and chewing insects, including codling moth and other key lepidopteran pests. Controlling pests early in the life cycle helps prevent population buildup and protects crop yield and market value. For more information, visit altacor.dupont.com.
Lannate® LV, Lannate® SP and Vydate® L are restricted use pesticides. This recommendation is made as permitted under FIFRA Section 2(ee) and has not been submitted to or approved by EPA.
