Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Control Strategies
Second-generation brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) can hit hard late in the growing season. “BMSB flights always pose a threat to crop quality and yield, but unlike the overwintering generation, the hardy wave we face in August is more challenging to control,” says John Leggett, retail account manager, DuPont Crop Protection.
Since BMSB can reinfect a treated area quickly, Leggett says repeat applications are often needed. “Consult product labels for the minimum application interval for each crop for stink bug control,” he advises. “If another application is needed before the minimum application interval, use a different insecticide with a different mode of action.”
Two good stink bug control options are DuPont™ Lannate® LV insecticide and Vydate® L insecticide/nematicide. Both provide fast knockdown of BMSB to help minimize crop damage. “When you need a big hammer, Lannate® LV or Vydate® L are proven to get the job done,” says Leggett.
DuPont™ Lannate® LV and Vydate® L are restricted-use pesticides.
Section 2(ee) label extends Vydate® L use to help control BMSB.
Always read and follow all label directions and precautions for use when using any pesticide alone or in tank-mix combinations.
In line with integrated pest management and good agricultural practices, insecticide applications should be made when pollinators are not foraging to avoid unnecessary exposure.
DuPont™ Lannate® LV insecticide and Vydate® L insecticide/nematicide are not registered for sale or use in all states. Contact your DuPont representative for details and availability in your state.
