DuPont™ Zorvec™ Disease Control Combats Downy Mildew of Grapes

When it comes to grape growing, what you don’t see can hurt you. You need to stop downy mildew of grapes before the symptoms appear. Fortunately, new DuPont™ Zorvec™ technology offers unmatched control of this disease, providing you an opportunity to realize higher yields, better grape quality and improved productivity.

The best approach to controlling downy mildew of grapes – also called Plasmopara viticola  or peronospora – is to apply a preventive application before the disease can damage the plant. In addition to destroying grapes, downy mildew can reduce the quality and yield of your harvest and cause indirect losses when premature defoliation predisposes vines to winter injuries. It can take a vineyard several years to recover from a severe injury.  

“Fungicides are essential for grapes,” says Gianni Menotti, an enologist and agronomist in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy. “Prevention is always best.” With Zorvec™, the results of proper application speak for themselves. The ideal time to apply products containing Zorvec™ technology is early in crop development, which for grapes means the flowering and fruit set stages. The number of flowers directly correlates with the potential number of grapes. If the plant is stressed and unable to produce flowers, grape yields will be limited. Once the grapes are set, downy mildew can cause them to fall off the vine, further reducing yield.

Protection of New Grape Leaves

Research trials have shown Zorvec™ technology is extremely effective at protecting new growth after application. This offers you more consistency and control of downy mildew of grapes. Zorvec™ exhibits highly systemic activity, meaning it gets into the plant and spreads to new growth, protecting the plant longer between applications. This reduces the number of applications needed to control downy mildew.

“Peronospora (downy mildew) can cause total qualitative and quantitative loss of grapes in the vineyard,” notes Paolo Viglioni, an Italian agronomist. “We call it ‘the disease.’ Peronospora is the No. 1 enemy. What I’ve noticed during [Zorvec™ technology] testing is an improvement in the performance … the health of the grapes, the health of the leaves when this new fungicide has been applied.”

Fast Penetration and Rainfastness

Zorvec™ disease control enters plants quickly and is rainfast in as little as 20 minutes, a critical trait for grape growers.

“It’s essential to have a product that can resist runoff in order to protect the vine in regions of northern Italy,” Viglioni says. “This means that after rain, the vine is still protected. This may reduce application costs for the grower.”

Viglioni says Zorvec™ disease control offers flexibility and will be a sustainable solution. It is effective, but also selective with non-target organisms and carries a low environmental impact.
