OPTIMASH® Enzymes Enabling New Advancements in Production of Renewable Fuel

Optimized range of enzymes are helping energy producers decrease feedstock requirements and improve yields

Known commonly as “Generation 1.5” technology, the ability to convert corn kernel fiber to cellulosic ethanol bridges the gap between the production of ethanol from corn (Gen 1.0) and cellulosic ethanol (Gen 2.0). OPTIMASH® enzymes are specifically optimized to hydrolyze corn kernel fiber from different processes and various pretreatment conditions. These enzymes can be used for saccharification of fiber before fermentation, or for Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation (SSF) process to convert corn fiber into ethanol.

When paired with pretreatment, OPTIMASH® enzymes break down the chemical bonds in corn fiber to produce fermentable C5 and C6 sugars. Depending on the process, this additional ethanol may qualify as cellulosic under current US EPA guidelines. In addition to cellulosic ethanol, OPTIMASH® enzymes play a vital role in the recovery of additional distiller’s corn oil for enhanced co-product value. With this technology, a typical 100MMGPY facility can produce 6-10MMGPY additional ethanol and 30-40% more distillers corn oil.

For the growing biogas sector, OPTIMASH® AD-100 represents an exciting biotechnology advancement that helps biomethane producers improve biogas yields and process robustness. The enzyme breaks down organic matter – like food, paper, animal and farm wastes – resulting in sugars more suitable for biogas-producing microorganisms. The addition of this enzyme into the biomethane process improves the profitability for customers and operators by reducing feedstock requirements and increasing biogas production. OPTIMASH® AD-100 has been shown to produce up to a 13 percent increase in biogas yields in anaerobic digesters.
