Effective Baccharis Control with Viewpoint® or Streamline®

Keeping rights of way clear is critical for the safety of homeowners and businesses that count on uninterrupted power. Eastern baccharis, an aggressive, dense brush species, can grow up to 10 feet tall, creating hazardous conditions that interfere with critical utility infrastructure. A prolific seed producer, eastern baccharis spreads quickly, rapidly overtaking desirable plants. Now land managers have two options for controlling this and other hard-to-control brush species with DuPont™ Viewpoint® and Streamline® herbicides.

Baccharis Control Trial

Location: Pine Bluff, Ark.

Situation: The trial site was a power line right of way with heavy eastern baccharis coverage. The site was divided into separate trial plots with five eastern baccharis plants treated in each plot. Each treatment was replicated three times.

Date of treatment: July 25, 2009

Treatments: Viewpoint® and Streamline® were applied in foliar treatments at the rates shown in the chart below with MSO at 1% v/v. A combination treatment (Arsenal + Milestone + Razor Pro) included a nonionic surfactant at 1% v/v. All treatments were applied at 23 gallons per acre.

Results: Evaluation 298 days after treatment showed better than 98% eastern baccharis control with Viewpoint® applied at 16.5 or 19.8 ounces per acre or Streamline® applied at 11.4 ounces per acre.

Application Tips for Success

  • Apply Viewpoint® to eastern baccharis in non-crop sites at a rate of 13 to 20 ounces per acre when brush plants are actively growing. Application rates should not exceed 20 ounces per acre per year. Refer to label for specific use rates for high-volume foliar or ground broadcast applications.

  • Use sufficient water volume to ensure thorough foliage coverage.

Choose Streamline® to Help Preserve Desirable Grasses

Streamline® promotes a healthy grass understory of desirable perennial and native grasses in utility rights of way, roadsides and other areas. To reduce any temporary yellowing and/or stunting of grasses that may occur, apply Streamline® later in the spring after new growth is 4 to 6 inches tall or in the fall. Always refer to the Streamline® label for complete application instructions.
