Streamline® Takes Out Kudzu in Demonstration Trial

Hot, humid conditions encourage kudzu proliferation. This rapidly growing vine thrives in high-rainfall areas, quickly moving across fields and up trees and utility poles, encroaching on utility and roadside rights of way. Now land managers can turn to DuPont™ Streamline® herbicide for long-lasting kudzu control to help them provide safe, reliable power transmission.

Mississippi plot 58 days after application of DuPont™ Streamline® at 4.75 ounces per acre(left) and 7.0 ounces per acre(right).

Untreated Kudzu

Streamline® Kudzu Control Trial

Location: Lexington, Miss.

Situation: The site was a former pasture that had not been grazed for several years. Kudzu had covered nearly 100 percent of the area.

Date of treatment: May 11, 2009

Treatments: Streamline® was applied at two rates and compared to an untreated check area. Applications were made at 20 gallons per acre. All treatments included MSO at 1 percent v/v.

Results: Demonstrating excellent kudzu control, Streamline® applied at the 7.0 ounce rate provided 95 percent control 113 days after treatment. In a different two-year trial at the same site, the novel active ingredient in Streamline® — aminocyclopyrachlor — was applied alone the first year, followed by an application of Streamline® in the second year. This program provided excellent kudzu control on the site, while allowing desirable grasses to reestablish.

Application Tips for Success

  • Apply Streamline® at 7.5 to 11.5 ounces per acre at the full-leaf stage of brush plants. Do not apply more than 11.5 ounces per acre per year.
  • Use sufficient water volume to ensure thorough foliage coverage. This will vary, depending on the size and density of the brush being treated.
  • Add a high-quality, MSO-based adjuvant to the spray solution. The MSO may provide increased leaf absorption of Streamline®.

Streamline® promotes a healthy grass understory of desirable perennial and native grasses in utility rights of way, roadsides and other areas. To reduce any temporary yellowing and/or stunting of grasses that may occur, apply Streamline® later in the spring after new growth is 4 to 6 inches tall or in the fall.
