Kapton® PST for Pressure Sensitive Tape Industry

Kapton® Exceeds Industry Requirements in Pressure Sensitive Tape Applications

DuPont™ Kapton® PST grade polyimide film is a crystalline film designed for the pressure sensitive tape industry with improved film attributes for PST coaters.

DuPont™ Kapton® polyimide film is a global leader in the industry, offering 40 years of diverse products, technical support and customer service. Kapton® possesses a unique combination of properties that makes it ideal for a variety of applications.

Kapton® film strives to meet the industry’s most critical criteria. Recent customer feedback indicates that temperature/heat resistance, dielectric strength, elongation, thickness tolerance modulus,UL listing, tensiles and adhesions are the critical attributes for polyimide film.

Kapton® PST polyimide film

DuPont™ Kapton® PST grade polyimide film is a crystalline film designed for the pressure sensitive tape industry with improved film attributes for PST coaters.

Kapton® PST polyimide film is available in 50, 100, 200, 300 and 500 gages. These gages are available in widths up to 52” for the 50 gage and 60” for the 100, 200, 300 and 500 gages. DuPont has refined their process to offer superior point thickness and gage control across the web to improve roll formation and eliminate gage bands, wrinkles and MD ridges.

Kapton® PST has excellent dielectric strength. A typical value for 1 mil Kapton® film is 7700 volt/mil, tested at 60 Hz.

Kapton® has excellent chemical resistance; there are no known organic solvents for the film. Kapton® does not melt or burn as it has the highest UL-94 flammability rating: V-0. The outstanding properties of Kapton® permit it to be used at both high and low temperature extremes where other organic polymeric materials would not be functional.

Identification Techniques

Viewing the film surface under a microscope to check for a distinct processing pattern and to see if it has slip additive can identify Kapton® PST grade polyimide film. Additional tests can be run for further characterization (FTIR, CTE, basic mechanical properties).

Other distinguishing differences of Kapton® include:

  • Superior tensile strength
  • Good elongation
  • Minimal variation between MD and TD properties
  • Superior dielectric
  • UL listing
  • Long length splice-free rolls
  • Batch-to-batch uniformity
