Nestle' France SAS used structures containing DuPont™ Bynel® in barrier packaging that can withstand the sterilization required for baby food. The light, easy-to-open, microwavable containers won a gold award at the 2005 DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation.

The Challenge

As the French baby food market transitioned to plastic containers, Nestle' France SAS sought barrier packaging that could withstand the high temperatures of sterilization needed to maximize the shelf life of its baby food. The packaging also needed to meet other requirements of baby food: to be microwavable, lightweight, and non-breakable.

The Solution

EDV Packaging, a Spanish packaging converter and supplier of food cups to Nestlé, chose DuPont™ Bynel® adhesive resin as tie layer, because it can withstand the high temperatures of sterilization required for producing the long-life, ambient stable packages needed for baby food.

The five-layer, thermoformed baby food cups use a PP/EVOH/PP sheet that is coextruded, using DuPont™ Bynel®, and offers a barrier to oxygen, moisture, and UV light, preventing product degradation. The plastic is fully pasteurizable, transparent, and microwaveable. Shelf life at ambient temperatures is one year.

Key Advantages

Bynel® offers many advantages to food manufacturers, converters, and consumers:

  • Safe and sterile: The thermoformed round-shaped cups offer a barrier to oxygen, moisture, and UV light.
  • Easy-open convenience: A peelable barrier film makes the cups easy to open.
  • Microwave-safe: Bynel® allows for heating in microwave ovens.
  • Lightweight and non-breakable: Bynel® helps strengthen the package structure, while reducing weight.
  • User-friendly: No ribs on the bottom or sides make it easy to spoon out all the contents, so no food goes to waste.
  • Attractive design: The shaped, transparent containers help differentiate the product on the shelf.
  • 12-month shelf life: Bynel® can withstand the rigorous thermal processing required to produce long-life, ambient, stable packages, making it perfect for baby food.
  • Reduced costs: By shifting to these nested plastic containers, transportation and warehouse costs have been reduced.

Barrier packaging that keeps baby food safe, fresh, and convenient meets the needs of both babies and parents.
