A Collaborative Approach to Innovative Food Packaging Design
From the shelf to the fridge to the table, DuPont packaging materials help make foods and beverages look and taste their best, while being easy to open and enjoy.
DuPont works with the world’s leading food manufacturers, packaging converters, and retailers to create innovative beverage and food packaging design solutions.
We collaborate on ways to improve safety, freshness, and convenience, and create eye-catching packaging that set products apart. Leveraging our deep portfolio of packaging materials and application development expertise, our partners also benefit from food packaging design that can lower costs, increase productivity, and help reduce its environmental impact.
Designing for a Smaller Footprint
Protecting flavor and quality are just the beginning. Today, many consumers are also looking for products that show environmental responsibility through reduced or improved packaging, which means less packaging waste and spoiled foods in our landfills. Our food packaging design solutions can help reduce environmental impact.
Meat, Poultry, and Seafood
DuPont has a wide variety of packaging resins to match the unique packaging needs of fresh and frozen meat, poultry, and seafood to bulk deli, bacon, and hot dogs. Popular resins include DuPont™ Surlyn® ionomer resin, DuPont™ Appeel® peelable sealant resins, DuPont™ Bynel® adhesive resin, Nucrel®, and Elvax®. Barrier films using DuPont™ Selar® barrier resins address flavor transfers and create a unique oxygen barrier when wet or chilled, making them an ideal choice to help preserve smell and increase flavor retention for greater consumer satisfaction.
Cheese and Dairy
Specially engineered to provide controlled peel strength over abroad range of sealing and use temperatures, Appeel® allows fora range of tamper-evident peel modes for greater consumer protection. Appeel® and Nucrel® do not affect taste, even after prolonged contact, so milk, cheese and other dairy products keep their fresh flavor longer.
Multi-layer packaging films using a barrierofSelar®PA control water vapor, oxygen, and carbon dioxide gas exchanges—providing better control for barrier requirements such as maturation and weight loss for soft cheeses.
DuPont packaging solutions range from cook-in processing to display, and lidding that can both self-vent and prevent condensation. For microwave applications, modifier resins like Surlyn® and DuPont™ Elvaloy® ethylene copolymer resins improveimpact strength and heat resistance, while Appeel® provides flexible lidding options for hermetic seals that can self-vent during microwaving.
Surlyn® can be utilizedto create extremely transparent multilayer films with oxygen barrier properties to prevent the discoloration of ready-to-heat foods in thermoformable containers. It also helps prevent the build-up of purge around the edges of pre-cooked meatsfor a more appetizing appearance.
Dry Foods and Snacks
From helping chips stay crisp and crunchy, to keeping soft cookies soft, and confections sweet and delicious, DuPont offers a wide variety of resin combinations that can tailor the packaging’s hardness, stiffness, and flexibility characteristics for better food presentation and protection against damage.
DuPont packaging resins such as Surlyn® ensure excellent seal integrity, even amid liquids, dust, powders or particles, helping increase productivity and preserve freshness. And it provides a strong, consistent seal to aluminum packaging, forming an excellent moisture barrier for a variety of snack applications.
From soft drinks to bottled water, the first twist of a beverage cap tells consumers the drink they’re about to enjoy is crisp and fresh. Cap linersmade with DuPont™ Elvax® ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer resins provide greater protection against leaks, better flavor preservation and carbonation retention. Unlike other compounded liner materials, Elvax® does not cause unsightly brown residue on the inside of the bottle’s neck. It also reduces removal torque to help make beverage caps easier to open.
Appeel® provides superior seal-through of liquid on cup rims to create strong seals that are still easy to peel for consumers. Its easy processability at low temperatures also provides trouble-free processing of cup lidding in food service and frozen juice cups. And Nucrel® protects against flavor transfers so beverages retain their original flavor longer for longer shelf life and greater consumer satisfaction.
Reduced Leaks and Increased Seal Integrity
DuPont provides a range of packaging materials and sealing technologies that can withstand broad temperature ranges during packing and distribution. Sealing at broader temperature ranges, with better seal-through of contamination areas, helps ensure stronger, more consistent seal integrity on all sides of the package, and avoid the weak seal spots that cause leaks. Materials like Surlyn® and Appeel® help create packaging withsuperior clarity, seal integrity, and puncture- and abrasion-resistance for all kinds of foods and beverages.
Specially engineered to work with today’s high-speed processing equipment, DuPont food packaging resins deliver increased productivity with easy formability and stronger adhesion to a variety of substrates, as well as better abrasion resistance, shrink force and secondary seal strength.
