Range of Durability Options
DuPont resin combinations and experienced product development support enable brand owners and converters to tailor the hardness, stiffness, or flexibility characteristics of packaging for better food presentation and protection against damage.
High Hot Tack Strength
DuPont packaging resins, including Surlyn®, are scientifically engineered to provide increased hot tack strength for sealing and superior performance under a broader range of sealing temperatures. This helps maintain higher packaging line speeds and reduces the number of seal failures for greater moisture vapor control.
Excellent Foil Adhesion
Surlyn®, Nucrel®, and Appeel® provide a strong, consistent seal to aluminum packaging, forming an excellent moisture barrier for a variety of snack and dry food applications.
Controlled Opening and Unrivalled Seal-Through
Surlyn® can be modified to control its opening force and provide a more consistent peel compared to other resins. Its opening force can be controlled by varying the thickness of the Surlyn® layer, while continuation peel force can be controlled by mixing different grades of Surlyn® resin. This allows Surlyn® to deliver:
- Excellent tear propagation properties for directional tear
- Excellent peelability for easy opening
- Stable peel performance over time
- Reduced potential for seals to open during shipping and handling due to its high-performance seal characteristics
- Seal through powder contamination, maximum hot tack, low Seal Initiation Temperature (SIT), and the broadest range of operating temperatures
Stand-Up Pouches for Cereal, Rice, Biscuits, and Cookies
For stand-up pouches, DuPont™ Surlyn® Burst Peel technology provides easy, no-spill openings, and, in some cases, re-closing features. It is based on a co-extruded film of HDPE combined with a thin sealant layer of Surlyn®. This differs from other easy-open technologies, which are typically based on blends of incompatible resins.
As with other DuPont snack packaging solutions, it offers excellent seal-through contamination, higher packaging line speed, and reduced leakers during transport. And it increases shelf appeal by making pouches stand up straight.
Surlyn® Burst Peel technology can be used in blown-film or cast-film processes. It can be used in laminates with other substrates such as Mylar® OPET films or OPP, or in coextrusions with PA, EVOH, or other barrier resins. It can also be applied by extrusion coating onto paper, aluminum, or metalized films.
Powdered Food Protection
For dehydrated foods, such as coffee, soups, soluble drinks, bakery mixes, and sauces, using Surlyn® in aluminum-based pouches provides:
- Superior seal integrity, sealing through powder, gussets, and folds
- Higher line speeds due to excellent machinability, stiffness, and low seal initiation temperature
- Excellent protection against moisture and oxygen
- Fewer taste and flavor issues due to the minimization or elimination of primers
- Easy-tear opening
Cost Savings and Downgauging Potential
Only Surlyn® is able to combine stiffness and sealability at low temperatures. The direct adhesion of Surlyn® to aluminum, as well as its superior barrier performance with relation to oil, results in a greater resistance to delamination without the use of solvent-based primers or glues. Cereals and snacks packed in stand-up pouches eliminate the extra cost of the box. These combined benefits can lead to snack packaging material cost reduction. Surlyn® can also offer substantial downgauging potential, due to its toughness, which reduces puncture rates during handling and transportation, and its stiffness, which reduces overall thickness while still allowing for good machinability.
