Elvax® for Packaging

A Clear Choice for Enhancing Packaging Resins

Compatible with many polyolefin resins, DuPont™ Elvax® is an efficient choice for low-temperature sealing, flexibility, puncture resistance, and other properties required by food and medical packaging.

Inherently flexible, tough and clear, DuPont™ Elvax® packaging resins are used in a variety of food and medical packaging applications.

Elvax® provides excellent adhesion to other polymers, so it is often coextruded with other resins, including DuPont™ Appeel® lidding sealant resins and DuPont™ Bynel® adhesive resin to improve sealing and physical properties.

Multi-faceted Performance Properties

Elvax® ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer resin is used as a heat seal layer, coextrusion tie layer, or structural layer. Elvax® can be made into blown or cast monolayer and coextruded films.

Elvax® performance properties include:

  • Low seal initiation temperature for fast packaging speeds
  • Low shrink temperature
  • Greater adhesion than polyethylene (PE) to other polyolefins
  • Softer and clearer than PE
  • Enhanced flexibility
  • Increased impact strength
  • Improved puncture resistance
  • Excellent flex crack resistance
  • Excellent flow and caulking in seal area
  • Good bondage to PVdC in coextrusionprocesses

The Chemistry of Elvax®

Elvax® resins are branched copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate.  The vinyl acetate helps provide chemically active side chain branches that deliver unique functionality including lower sealing temperature, increased flexibility, improved optical properties, greater adhesion to a wide range of materials, and increased impact and puncture resistance.

Because Elvax® packaging resins are made on high-pressure autoclave reactors, like those used to produce low-density polyethylene (LDPE), they contain long chain branches that make them suitable for use in producing blown and cast films, as well as laminations. Elvax® resins can also be used in extrusion coating, but not widely, due to thermal degradation above 235°C process conditions.

Advantages for Brand Owners

Elvax® packaging resins provide a cost-effective, waste-reducing solution. Their low seal initiation temperature and ability to seal to themselves and other substrates allow for higher line speeds, and help reduce package failures.

Elvax® packaging resins can be blended into polyethylene to improve end-use properties, especially at low temperatures, for frozen food and ready-to-eat food packaging applications.

Besides packaging, Elvax® is used widely in industrial applications as it is easy to disperse in hot melts, wax blends and the dispersion is compatible with a range of materials.
