Durability That Makes Production More Efficient

More durable, more broadly resistant high-pressure seals are designed to last longer, limiting unplanned downtime, and providing the potential to extend planned maintenance intervals.

Kalrez® HPHT seals can help stretch the mean time between repair (MTBR) and therefore lower maintenance costs. Their long-term resistance to the harshest chemicals and the highest temperatures makes them resistant to swelling and embrittlement. Embrittlement is a significant cause of premature seal failure and costly production downtime. This is particularly important for O&G Exploration and Production operations (E&P).

Corrosion

Corrosion is an important driver in the adoption of FFKM elastomers even at moderate temperatures. This is not because other elastomers suffer from corrosion, but metallic components can be vulnerable. To protect steelwork, corrosion inhibitors can be added to drilling muds, and crude oil. These are often amine based, which can cause problems for other types of elastomers such as FKM types. Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) parts, can resist long term exposure to such amine based inhibitors as well as sour multi-phase fluids, and extreme alkaline environments. Use of Kalrez® parts can avoid sealing problems and retain high levels of elasticity and recovery, even after long-term exposure to such fluids at elevated temperatures.

Rapid Gas Decompression Performance

Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer parts for HPHT downhole environments can provide outstanding rapid gas decompression (RGD) resistance.

In rigorous third-party laboratory testing for rapid gas decompression (RGD) resistance, Kalrez® 0090 AS568-312 O-rings, received the best possible rating of “0000” per the NORSOK M-710 Rev 2 standard provided by MERL (UK).*

To achieve a “0000” rating, the seal must have no internal cracks, holes or blisters, of any size, after rapid gas decompression testing. Not all perfluoroelastomer parts available for oil and gas applications in the marketplace have achieved a “0000” rating at an external laboratory.

V-rings That Endure

When it comes to oil production, Kalrez® V-rings that were recovered after six years of service in a production well some 4,600 meters deep showed almost no signs of wear. The aged V-rings were indistinguishable in physical properties and appearance from un-aged control. Kalrez® V-rings can help provide more uptime and lower maintenance costs.

Backup-Rings

Backup rings are typically made of thermoplastic materials that when exposed to high pressure high temperature environments can creep or extrude to a high degree.

Vespel® polyimide exhibits much lower creep and much greater extrusion resistance than thermoplastics currently used in HPHT application and can therefore provide improved resilience in backup ring applications in addition to higher maximum operating temperatures.

Vespel® SCP Backup rings can withstand temperatures up to 350°C in harsh downhole environments without significant creep or extrusion.
