DuPont Performance Polymers to Highlight 2K Molding Technology

WILMINGTON, DE, Oct 5, 2011 – DuPont Performance Polymers (DPP) will be participating with DuPont Protection Technology, (Booth 2216) showcasing 2K molding technology using  DuPont™ Viton® fluoroelastomers, and DuPont™ Vamac® ethylene acrylic elastomers. DPP also will feature a video demonstrating 2K molding technology.

2K molding technology is direct overmolding of rubber gaskets onto DuPont™ Zytel® nylon resin thermoplastic parts. With one step molding, primer-less adhesion, no manual mounting and design flexiblilty, 2K molding technology provides excellent sealing performance, hot air and fluid resistance and low permeation at lower cost.

Vamac® ethylene acrylic elastomers (AEM) and Viton® fluoroelastomers (FKM) are a winning combination in the manufacture of turbo charger hoses. Together, their unique properties of temperature performance up to 200 °C, low cost, an extrusion process that eliminates silicone (VMQ) wrapping, and better interlayer adhesion than FKM/VMQ, allows turbo charger hoses made with Vamac® and Viton® meet today’s tough requirements.

DuPont™ Neoprene polychloroprene will also be highlighted for its outstanding physical toughness, wide operating temperature range and resistance to ozone, sun and weather.

Presentation of Papers:

In a paper entitled, “Testing of AEM and FKM Compounds in Acid Condensates for Turbocharger Systems,” by Edward McBride, DuPont technology associate, discusses the effects of acid condensates on AEM and FKM compounds. The acid condensate levels in turbocharger systems are increasing as more and more of the exhaust gas is recycled. As the pH level decreases, some of the elastomers used in turbocharger systems do not perform well, while AEM and FKM compounds maintain good performance.

Also, Theresa Dobel, DuPont senior technical consultant, will present a paper entitled, “Fuel and Permeation Resistance of Fluoroelastomers to Methanol Blends,” documenting the performance of different grades of Viton® fluoroelastomer (FKM) in various blends of fuel and methanol at elevated temperatures to understand the effect higher temperatures have on future global specifications for fuel systems. There is an increasing use of methanol as an alternative fuel source for automobiles in China, since methanol is produced from coal. While the effect of different fuel-methanol blends on FKM polymers at room temperature is well known, there is little data available at elevated temperatures.
