Oil and Gas Polymers for Durability Under Duress
DuPont has a full range of polymers with properties that provide durability, and tested resistance to heat, chemicals, pressure, and corrosion protection.
DuPont oil and gas polymers are engineered to be able to withstand some of the world’s most demanding operating environments. While outdoor conditions around oil and gas facilities can be arctic cold or desert hot, it’s inside the wells and other machinery that the atmosphere really gets tough.
A Range of Solutions
DuPont puts science to work, offering a systematic approach to help meet today’s most demanding energy industry challenges with a full range of oil and gas polymers, and experienced application development support worldwide.
Solid Wall Pipe Solutions
DuPont™ Pipelon® and Hytrel® are performance polymers most often used for hydraulic control lines, siphon string, gathering lines, produced water piping, and pipe liners. These materials provide a range of properties that facilitate oil and gas operations, including barrier properties and enhanced temperature resistance, flexibility for coiling, creep resistance, extrusion stability, plus corrosion, rust and fatigue resistance. They’re also easy to weld in butt welding and electro fusion processes.
Barrier Resin Applications
DuPont offers several polymers that are excellent choices when barrier resins are needed for wire and cable applications, liners, risers, and reinforced thermoplastic pipes (RTP). They include Pipelon® 401, Pipelon® UB45, Hytrel® and Kevlar®. These polymers provide temperature and chemical resistance, fluid and emissions containment, and abrasion prevention.
Multilayer Pipe Bonding
DuPont™ Bynel® offers adhesion and bonding between layers in multilayer piping systems. These resins bond olefins to nylons and nylons to fluoropolymers, as well as other engineering resin systems.
Cable Jacketing and Insulation
For seismic, power and instrumentation cables, Pipelon® 401 and Hytrel® provide abrasion resistance, environmental protection, good dielectric properties, enhanced flexibility including at low temperatures, hydrocarbon resistance, excellent high-speed processing, and easy installation..
For coil cords, jacketing, gaskets and more, Hytrel® has the property characteristics required for consistent performance. From chemical and H2S resistance and low swell to enhanced fatigue performance, low-temperature flexibility, creep resistance, and snap-back ability, Hytrel® properties make it an obvious choice.
High Pressure, High Temperature Seals for Downhole Applications
DuPont™ Kalrez® parts include high pressure, high temperature seals (HTHP seals) that can provide long-lasting performance in a spectrum of oil and gas industry uses. Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) parts are resistant to 1800 chemicals and solvents, and even resist sour multi-phase fluids. They retain high levels of elasticity and recovery, even after long-term exposure to elevated temperatures.
Kalrez® parts for HPHT downhole environments provide outstanding rapid gas decompression (RGD) resistance. In rigorous third-party laboratory testing for rapid gas decompression (RGD) resistance, Kalrez® 0090 AS568-312 O-rings, received the best possible rating of 0000 per the NORSOK M-710 Rev 2 standard.
A broad range of materials and applications development expertise positions allows DuPont to collaborate with energy producers and equipment makers to help create innovative new solutions. These solutions can help control cost, improve equipment lifetime, and keep energy production flowing more reliably.
