As its name implies, DuPont™ Spallshield® composite prevents spalling (the shower of glass that occurs when conventional glass is penetrated from the opposite side). It is a preconfigured combination of PVB, PET and a hardcoat (see illustration) that when laminated to glass adds significantly to safety and penetration resistance, while protecting against spalling if the glass is impacted or broken.
Typical uses are automotive skylights where the safety performance of the Spallshield® composite helps manufacturers create larger, lighter-weight openings. In buildings, Spallshield® composites also can be used, with extra layers of glass and interlayer added if desired for further penetration resistance. The anti-spalling feature is particularly attractive in high-security applications such as designs requiring resistance to high-powered gunfire and explosions. Spallshield® composite lamination increases the penetration resistance of a given thickness of glass; conversely, it gives you the option of decreasing glass thickness without loss of original resistivity.
