A Secure Home for Japanese Art Treasures
 | Distortion-free view of Japanese treasures |
The Arts of Japan galleries at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art house the most comprehensive collection of Japanese art outside of Japan. Security considerations were paramount to Kevin Roone, John Dinkeloo and Associates of Hamden, Connecticut, USA – the architects planning the gallery – which is why they selected laminated glass display panels using DuPont Butacite polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer.
The largest laminated lite of glass used is 4.9 metres (179 inches) wide by 2.8 metres (102 inches) deep, while many of the other laminated glass units are only slightly smaller.
In addition to protection from theft or damage, there were other important reasons why the architects specified laminated safety glass. It offers visitors a distortion-free view of the treasures – a real bonus over horizontally-tempered glass which often carries distortions. Also, since laminated glass absorbs potentially damaging UV rays, the treasures are protected from fading.
