Chromafusion® architectural decorative glass products expand design opportunities for laminated glass

Five years of joint design work between celebrated artist Claudio Cesar (Cesar Color Inc.) and DuPont has resulted in the worldwide launch of Chromafusion® , Cesar Color Inc.'s trademark for its architectural decorative glass products, based on DuPont's Butacite® Advanced Glazing Products technology.

Chromafusion® glass panels bring new creative potential to interior design by reproducing customized graphics, textures and colors permanently between laminated glass in panels of various sizes up to 147 x 337 cm. The laminated interlayer mimics the appearance of sand-blasted glass without a rough, porous or abrasive surface and is available in five densities to allow for the control of hue and translucency.

In one elegant application featuring curved glass interior doors, Chromafusion® technology allowed blown-up photographs of two ancient Greek terra-cotta figurines to be inserted between the clear annealed safety glass which was bent before lamination.

In another recent application by CRSS Architects for an Audi US showroom, Cesar Color Inc. developed a six meter long, freestanding room divider within independent double-sided photographic images – on one side is the company's logo and on the other side a huge blow-up of a 1930s Audi racing car. To produce the photographic layer, Cesar Color Inc. worked from a 50-year old, black and white print and used advanced digital computer photo-imaging to process the interlayer.

With Chromafusion® products, architects or laminators can either select standard designs or create their own, custom-design, photo images and colors. Custom designs can be created in line art, halftones or large-scale, full-color photomurals and a range of metallic colors can be combined with custom colors, black, white or sandblast densities.

Other important design advantages include the option to specify the degree of opacity to achieve the desired privacy and clear, precise and unmottled light transmission levels with an extensive color range – more versatile than frit or sandblast. Control of subtle tones, with a two-sided, smooth finish, unlike traditional sandblast, can also be easily achieved and light-fast designs are protected from wear.

Chromafusion® products can be fabricated to exact field dimensions with no waste using conventional glass installation techniques and give better sound attenuation than float glass. Chromafusion® is also low-maintenance safety glass, which resists graffiti and gives a two-sided, smooth finish, which protects the design.

The products are manufactured to clear, annealed glass standards, which meet industry standards for safety glass. They are available in any thickness or specification including bent, heat-strengthened, tempered, tinted, reflective or mirrored and also permit secondary fabrication techniques such as holes, seamed, ground or polished edges, notches and miters.
