The Singapore Ritz Carlton Millenia

Sunshades in Chromafusion for new Ritz Carlton in Singapore

Since the early 1900's, the name Cesar Ritz has been synonymous with the loftiest standards of luxury, grandeur and personal attention. The latest addition to the Ritz chain is Singapore's Ritz Carlton Millenia, a seven acre oasis nestled in the heart of the city's Pontiac Marina Centre.

The Singapore Ritz Carlton Millenia was designed by Pritzker prize-winning architect, Kevin Roche of Kevin Roche, John Dinkeloo and Associates of Connecticut, USA, and has unrivalled views of Marina Bay, the financial district of Raffles Place and the remote islands of Indonesia. The entire hotel is raised 36.5meters (120 feet) above ground level to provide unhindered views even on the lowest levels.

The 1,222 luxury guest rooms of the hotel are richly furnished with marble floors, teak wood panels and Tibetan rugs. They also all have large windows incorporating 'sunshades' (affectionately referred to as 'eyelids' by the hotel staff) of Chromafusion architectural decorative glass, based on DuPont Butacite® Advanced Glazing Products technology.

The sunshades enable guests to appreciate the breathtaking panoramic sea views unhindered by curtains, since laminated safety glass with Chromafusion can be adjusted to five varying degrees of opacity to achieve the desired privacy inside the rooms while letting through clear, unmottled light transmission levels. These aesthetic considerations are augmented by characteristics of solar gain reduction, penetration resistance, ultra-violet screening and sound attenuation. In addition, the room-side surface of the glass will not fingerprint, stain or wear.

Architect Kevin Roche explained: "The sunshades of Chromafusion add to the luxury feel of the hotel rooms. We found the 'rice-paper' pattern from Cesar Color's decorative glass range to be both highly attractive and acceptable to the hotel's clientele."

The sunshades are comprised of aluminum-framed, laminated glass panes attached to the building walls above the window. More than 5,000 square meters of laminated glass with Chromafusion were incorporated in the construction of the 1,400 sunshades used throughout the hotel.

Chromafusion is also being used extensively throughout the entire Pontiac Marina development; as well as the sunshades in the Ritz, it is also used in the exterior canopies and the skylights of the hotel, in the storefront glazing of the retail podium and in the exterior curtain wall glazing in the complex's office tower and retail podium. The total quantity of laminated glass used in the Pontiac Marina project is 10,240 square meters.

The type of glass used is 7.7mm (5/16 inch) custom Chromafusion architectural graphic glass, comprised of two lites of 3mm (1/8 inch) heat-strengthened float glass, a 1.7mm (0.067 inch) CCI Interlayer and seamed edges.

Chromafusion technology uses a decorative layer between two glass sheets to create laminated glass panels

Chromafusion Technology uses a decorative layer between two glass sheets to create laminated glass panels and can capture any color, graphic or texture with perfect clarity in laminated glass, giving new freedom to designers and architects. Chromafusion is based on the innovative technology of Butacite® Advanced Glazing Products from DuPont.
