Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus keeps the show rolling with train glazing of Spallshield®

A hectic tour schedule meant installing train windows while the show was on the road

Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus gives around 1,000 performances per year in 90 US cities. Home for the performers, crew and animals is a railcar-turned apartment. When the 270 windows in the Ringling train needed to be replaced following a Federal Railroad Administration review, the show needed to go on; Ringling needed a window system that could be installed with no stops in the show's hectic tour schedule.

Roy Fullgrapp, the circus train's refit manager, found the answer in DuPont Spallshield® composite window glazing and set up mobile window installation shops along the train's route. Sheets of window glass laminated with Spallshield® were ordered and shipped to the cities on the tour route. There, Ringling's maintenance crew cut the windows to customized specifications and installed them before moving on to the next city.

The total refit took only six weeks to complete. Roy Fullgrapp said that he was extremely pleased with the DuPont product: "Spallshield® is glazier-friendly! Our crews found it easy to cut, easy to work with and extremely suitable for our application."

Spallshield® is a multilayer of DuPont Butacite® PVB and strong, abrasion-resistant polyester film that together prevent spalling. It can be laminated to the protective side of bullet-resistant glazing, glass-clad polycarbonate constructions, transportation glazing and even monolithic, tempered or annealed glass.
