Florida retirement community installs impact-resistant windows with SentryGlas®

Century Village, a Florida retirement community, will feature 11 new, four-story buildings using DuPont SentryGlas® composite to protect its residents from wind-blown debris during hurricanes.

Century Village in Pembroke Pines, Florida, has become the first community in the State to install code-approved, impact-resistant windows laminated with DuPont SentryGlas® Composite to protect its residents from wind-blown debris during hurricanes. SentryGlas® was chosen for its ability to provide year-round protection and because complicated installation procedures and maintenance are not necessary; peace of mind is provided around the clock to residents of the retirement community since they know they are constantly protected.

"We are always looking for new ways to make life easier and less stressful for our residents. SentryGlas® windows allow our residents and their families to have a sense of security if a hurricane threatens South Florida," said Mike Rich, Director of Marketing for Century Village. "As people move into this new phase at Century Village, they will come to see the advantages of this new form of security. DuPont SentryGlas® requires no complicated shutter installation and places no additional burden on our residents to secure their homes with external fittings."

SentryGlas®, a three-layer composite that is factory-laminated to window glass, consists of a tough polyvinyl butyral layer, a strong polyester layer and an abrasion-resistant coating. It was the first product to allow glass windows and doors to meet South Florida's tough new building code for hurricane protection, put in place in 1994, after Hurricane Andrew. Impact-resistant windows with SentryGlas® offer 24-hour protection not just from hurricanes, but also from burglary and forced break-in implements. The DuPont product also absorbs over 99% of the sun's ultra-violet light, thus helping to protect curtains, carpets, paintings and furniture from the fading that could otherwise be caused by these damaging rays.
