Shanghai Pearl Light Railway Line uses laminated glass for noise barrier windows

Laminated glass windows block noise from the tracks.

Shanghai's new Pearl Light Railway Line One has more than 20,000 m2 of laminated glass barrier windows with DuPont Butacite® PVB for sound reduction, safety, and security reasons. This downtown line, which is suspended 15 m above ground level, runs 25 km from the north of Shanghai to the city's south west. It started up services in December 2000.

Laminated glass was selected since it provides the best possible noise barrier for the pedestrians on the streets below, while displaying none of the unsightly crazing or yellowing characteristic of plastic-based transparent noise barrier solutions.

The Shanghai Pearl Light Railway Line

The windows run the length of the overhead railway line on both sides of its casing, giving passengers great views of the city below. The use of laminated glass also protects the driver and passengers from small projectiles such as stones.

Each of the clear laminated glass window panes (using 0.76 mm PVB), supplied by Shanghai Yaohua Architectural Glass Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Yaojiang Glass Factory, bears the DuPont Butacite® PVB logo. The logo attests that the glass incorporates genuine DuPont PVB. A second Shanghai Light Railway with similar specifications is due to start up construction soon.
