Glass walls make parking lot lighter, less threatening

For the airport parking lot in Stuttgart, Germany, architects Arat-Siegel & Partners wanted a departure from traditional enclosed parking lots with connotations of darkness, fear and entrapment. Partner Mete Arat told LGN: "We wanted maximum transparency for the parking lot. The 21 mm-thick, self-standing laminated glass elements we selected for the exterior 'walls' of the ramp consist of single panes of laminated glass (90 cm x 240 cm) with no mullions and an average 10 cm gap between each panel. For this design, laminated glass was the only solution that met safety and security requirements and structural strength considerations." The laminator was Seele of Augsberg, Germany.
