Dow Presents Paper with Audi AG at JEC World 2018

High-volume manufacturing of complex CFRP components is now possible

Schwalbach, Germany - March 01, 2018 - - Composite-based design coupled with innovative, cost-efficient production technologies is enabling mass production of large, lightweight, complex carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) components for passenger vehicles.

“Mass Reduction for Mass Production: High Volume Manufacturing of CFRP,” a paper co-presented by Felix Diebold, Development Lightweight Design, AUDI AG and Martin Reimers, Market Manager Composites, Dow Automotive Systems, will be given on March 7 at 10.00 during JEC WORLD 2018. The paper details the development and mass production of a CFRP rear wall structure for the new Audi A8. The component was developed by AUDI AG in collaboration with Voith Composites GmbH, Dow Automotive Systems and ZOLTEK Corp. The CFRP technology was made possible through several factors:

  • An appropriate composite-based design that transferred and optimized CFRP principles from sports car to mass production platforms
  • An integral design that reduced the structure to a single component with integrated function
  • Carbon fiber from ZOLTEK and preform technology from Voith that included direct fiber placement that reduced expensive CF scrap and facilitated optimal component design
  • Robust, automated and linked manufacturing process that included new Ultra RTM Technology that enabled low mold pressures with faster cycle times
  • Enabling technologies from Dow that comprised a cost-effective composite solution package integrating:
  • VORAFORCE™ epoxy resin with carbon fiber preform in an RTM process capable of fast cycle times and easy mold release
  • BETAFORCE™ composite adhesives to bond the structure sub-assembly and full assembly into the vehicle body for increased strength, stiffness and durability

The CFRP rear wall structure of the new Audi A8 – that can be viewed at Hall 5, Stand E42 – weighs 50 percent less than the previous generation, significantly increases torsional rigidity of the total vehicle and optimizes driving and handling characteristics.
