Overview of Kalrez® Product Selector

The Product Selection section is where the proper Kalrez® Perfluoroelastomer product is chosen for an application. When choosing this section, there are six major industry segments to consider: Chemical Process Industry, Semiconductor Industry, Life Sciences, Energy, Photovoltaic Industry, Aerospace Industry, and Kalrez® Valve Stem Packing. After choosing the proper industry segment, the user is questioned regarding process conditions. Each industry segment has slightly different information required for product selection and this is covered below.

For all industries, there is the capability to compare products. After chemicals have been selected and the program has listed Suggested and Alternate Products for an application, the Compare Products button will allow for a property comparison of these products, as well as a user selected fourth product. Comparison information includes properties such as maximum temperature, durometer, 100% modulus, elongation at break, etc.

Chemical Process Industry

On the opening screen please enter the process conditions. If the process conditions are not entered, the default is a standard temperature of 20°C (68°F) and a standard pressure of 0.10 MPa (14.70 psia). Note that above certain temperatures, if water is selected in the process stream, the program may query regarding the percentage of water in the application. This feature is used to aid in product selection.

When choosing the fluids in the process stream, position the pointer on the fluid name and double click to select the fluid. When a fluid has been selected, its name should appear under the Selected Fluids section. To deselect a fluid, double click on it in the Selected Fluids section and the name should be removed. When the cursor is active in the Fluids List section, a short cut can be used to help select a fluid in the fluid list. Simply type the first few letters of the name of the fluid to be selected and the cursor will go to that selection. Then double click the fluid to select it. In the Fluids List section, there is a column identified as "Info". If the letter "i" appears in a circle, it indicates that a comment is available regarding use of Kalrez® parts in that fluid. Clicking on the "i" will display the comment. These comments are intended to aid in product selection.

When finished inputting the application fluids, the program suggests the best product for the application. This product is chosen considering chemical resistance, physical properties, etc. Also listed is a first alternate product for the application as well as a second alternate. Each product also has a rating color associated with it. A green color indicates the product is an excellent match for the application, blue indicates a good match, yellow indicates a fair match, and red indicates the product is not suggested for the service. If information is needed on a product that is not directly listed, it can be obtained by clicking on the Select a Specific Product section of the screen and clicking on the appropriate product.

Semiconductor Industry

The first step is to select the proper semiconductor application type: Plasma/Gas, Thermal or Wet. After selecting the application, input the application temperature. The next step is to select the process type, for example, PECVD. This aids in the proper product selection for specific processes. The final step is to select the fluids in the application.

Life Sciences

If process conditions are not input, a standard temperature of 20°C (68°F) is assumed along with a pressure at the seal of 0.10 MPa (14.70 psia). These features are used to aid in product selection.

After the fluids have been selected, check the product ratings to determine how suitable the products are for the application. Depending on the application, certain products may be preferred over others. This part of the program makes no attempt to rank the products in order of preference.

Energy Industry

On the opening screen please enter the process conditions. If the process conditions are not entered, the default is a standard temperature of 20°C (68°F) and a standard pressure of 0.10 MPa (14.70 psia). Note that above certain temperatures, if water is selected in the process stream, the program may query regarding the percentage of water in the application. This feature is used to aid in product selection.

When this industry segment is selected, two additional options are available:

A value for Minimum Hardness, Shore A can be selected. This will limit the suggested products to those that have a hardness greater than or equal to the hardness selected. Note that the lower limit is one unit less than the selected hardness since Shore A hardness measurements have some variability.

If RGD (Rapid Gas Decompression) resistance is required, check the box. This will limit the suggested products to those that have RGD resistance per the ISO standard.

When choosing the fluids in the process stream, position the pointer on the fluid name and double click to select the fluid. Kalrez® Valve Stem Packing (KVSP)

KVSP is a product used as packing for valves. It benefits over standard packing (such as PTFE and graphite) include: reduced emissions, longer service life and improved process control by reduced friction on the valve stem. The only product used in standard KVSP is Kalrez® 3035. Information on this product can be found under Datasheets.

On the opening screen please enter the process conditions. If the process conditions are not entered, the default is a standard temperature of 20°C (68°F) and a standard pressure of 0.28 MPa (40 psia).

When finished inputting the application fluids, the program indicates whether Kalrez® 3035 is suitable for the application or not. If suitable for an application, the box next to Kalrez® 3035 is will be green and indicate Suitable. If not recommended, the box will be red and indicate Not Recommended. Suitability for use is determined considering the product's performance in the chemical(s) selected and application pressure.
