About the GOLD Program

The DuPont GOLD (Growth Opportunities Leading in Diversity) program is intended for doctoral and post-doctoral scientists from underrepresented groups (African American/Black, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Hispanic/Latinx, or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander) interested in career opportunities in industrial research at DuPont. The GOLD program supports DuPont’s commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion by:

  • Exposing doctoral and post-doctoral scientists to science & innovation at DuPont
  • Expanding DuPont’s recruiting efforts to strengthen workforce diversity

GOLD Seminar Competition

To attract underrepresented talent into the program, DuPont has been sponsoring and hosting a one-day seminar series and oral presentation competition at the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) Annual Conference since 2019. 

This year, the seminar competition will be held in-person on Monday September 26th, 2022 in Orlando, FL.  Applications will be accepted through the end of May 2022. The theme for 2022 competition is "Making a Difference for a Sustainable Future”.

As in previous years, selected participants will give an oral presentation on their research, competing to win $1,000 and a guaranteed interview with a DuPont recruiter. Each participant will be also matched with a DuPont mentor to provide guidance and help them prepare for the competition and interview.  Participants will also be given the opportunity to network with DuPont recruiters and learn more about a career in industry.

Interested applicants should submit the following to GOLD@dupont.com.

•      A resume (maximum 2 pages), including but not limited to work experience, a list of publications or patents, outreach, leadership experience, awards, etc.

•      A research summary that includes motivation, key accomplishments and contributions, the impact made on the research field and/or future work, and how your research and/or skills can contribute to a sustainable future in the chemical industry (up to 1,000 words and maximum of two figures)

•      An abstract (up to 500 words, no figures)

To be considered for the competition and interview, applicants must:

•      have at least one publication or patent

•      be graduating by Fall 2023 (no more than 3 years post-graduation). Those not graduating by Fall 2023 will only be considered for mentorship opportunity with DuPont GOLD team.

•      be pursuing a degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, data science, or other closely-related field.

•      be attending the NOBCChE Conference in-person on September 26th through 29th in Orlando, FL. For more information about the conference, please visit NOBCChE Website.

American Chemical Society (ACS)

Since 2021, DuPont GOLD has been partnering with the American Chemical Society (ACS). This partnership will allow DuPont GOLD to expand the applicant pool and broaden our footprint to include American Indian/Alaskan Native, Hispanic/Latinx, or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander demographics. The partnership with ACS will also facilitate pipeline growth of underrepresented students through ACS Bridge Fellow Program. 

In partnership with ACS, DuPont will host a workshop exploring different industrial career opportunities for ACS Bridge Fellows and underrepresented PhD students / post-doctoral scholars in the chemical sciences on June 21, 2022. Register and learn more here

The DuPont Gold competition at the 2019 NOBCCHE conference remains one of the most remarkable events of my graduate school journey. The excitement for me was on top gear from the day I decided to compete until the day of the competition. The best part of my experience was the unique opportunity of excellent mentors presented by DuPont to guide each participant. I will always be grateful to [my DuPont Mentor] and all other GOLD team members whose guidance extended beyond the competition. Needless to say, that the GOLD competition made a lifetime mark on my career pathway! The rare opportunity to meet renowned scientists in different fields and brilliant peers was priceless. It is definitely a wonderful opportunity that any graduate student should embrace wholeheartedly!

The DuPont GOLD Research Seminar competition at NOBCChE was a great experience and opportunity to relate my PhD research
to a real world setting. As a 5th year PhD candidate pursuing a career in industry, I felt there were some limitations in preparing
students entering professions outside of academia.This competition was the perfect transition for helping students see the "big
picture" and overall importance of their work in future technologies.

The mentorship established with DuPont staff and selected finalists added a personal touch and created a unique experience leading up to the NOBCChE conference. As one of the 8 finalists from over 90 applicants, placing 2nd in the first year of the competition was an amazing feeling. Interactions with fellow participants and DuPont representatives helped broaden my network and meet some great people in the field. I can't thank the organizers enough for creating this competition and giving those underrepresented in STEM an opportunity to showcase their scientific achievements.

Now as I start my career as a Research Scientist at DuPont, I hope to continue the tradition and help with programs like the GOLD Research Seminar promoting intellectual curiosity, encouragement, and inspiration.

The DuPont GOLD event was a celebration of the academic and scientific achievements of minority groups in STEM, one I will never forget.  The sense of camaraderie among the finalists and the intentional mentorship from DuPont staff made this experience unique and worthwhile.

Even though I didn’t win, I left St. Louis, Missouri, inspired, confident and proud to be a black chemical engineering PhD. Through the friendships forged with participants and my “big bro’s and sis’s” from DuPont, I have developed a strong network that I find continuous inspiration, encouragement and intellectual stimulation from.  I can’t thank the organizers enough, but will definitely pay it forward by investing into my network of mentees and continuing to lead and excel in my research as we invent a better now and a GOLDen future.
