Sustainable Mobility and DuPont Science

Global automakers are embracing the concept of sustainable mobility, and DuPont is right there with them. At DuPont, we’re working with automakers to help develop products that reduce dependence on fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

20 Years of Sustainable Mobility Innovation

One of the first companies to publicly establish environmental goals 20 years ago, DuPont is focused on developing new materials and capabilities. We’re working with our auto industry collaborators on sustainable mobility solutions that help reduce vehicle weight, help effect a smooth, cost-effective transition to alternative power sources, and improve fuel efficiency. Together, we’re creating products that are safer, more energy-efficient, produce fewer greenhouse gases, and help minimize our customers’ eco-footprint. To these ends, we’re developing internal DuPont processes that use less water, produce fewer impurities and by-products, and deliver results with lower emissions.

DuPont Role in Biofuel Development

From seed to pump, DuPont is committed to being part of the solution for alternative transportation fuels by engaging throughout the biofuels value chain. DuPont has invested in two advanced biofuel technologies and continues to develop products to enhance the efficiency of existing corn ethanol plants, all to meet the global need for environmentally responsible, renewable automotive fuels.

Refrigerants for a Cooler Planet

Truly a next-generation refrigerant, with zero ozone depletion potential and a global warming potential of 4 (99.7% lower than HFC-134a), DuPontTM Opteon yf is designed to meet global improvement needs, including the EU Mobile Air Conditioning (MAC) directive. And Opteon™ yf requires only a minor system redesign, making it cost-efficient for existing vehicles to make the switch.

Renewably Sourced Materials

DuPontTM Renewably Sourced Materials contain a minimum of 20% renewable content by weight and deliver equal or better performance than incumbent oil-based products. Used for airbag covers and air ducts, DuPont Hytrel® RS thermoplastic elastomer for example, has 20 to 60% renewably-sourced content by weight, and affords high flexibility and flex fatigue resistance and a wide continuous temperature range, among other high-performance characteristics. Ford, Fiat and Toyota won awards at the 2011 Society of Plastics Engineers “Most Innovative Use of Plastics Awards” event for components that employed renewably-sourced DuPont materials.

Additional DuPont sustainable mobility innovations include:DuPont Sorona® polymerDuPont™ Sorona® EP thermoplastic polymer,  and Susterra® propanediol from DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products, LLC.

At DuPont we’re about using science to transform challenges into innovation. Here are some of the initiatives we’re working on with our auto industry collaborators.
