DuPont and TFI Marine receive European Plastics Innovation Award

Coupling design know-how and material performance to harness wave energy

Geneva, Switzerland, Jan. 26, 2016 – DuPont Performance Materials (DPM) and Technology from Ideas, Ireland (TFI) received the 2016 European Plastics Innovation Award in the category “Hybrid Product” for The Dynamic Tethers mooring protection system used to protect wave energy devices in harsh sea conditions.

The TFI technology includes an energy damper, extruded in DuPont™ Hytrel® TPC-ET and shown in red in the photograph, within the mooring lines to reduce the forces along the whole tether with potential to reduce mooring costs in several sectors including buoys, fish farming and ocean energy.

The TFI technology solution is a tether with a combination of different polymer elements tailored to the wave environment.

This innovative application, made with DuPont™ Hytrel®, is the result of a joint development involving DuPont, TFI and manufacturer Radius Plastics. This prestigious award is jointly organised by PlasticsEurope, the European Association of Plastics Manufacturers, the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and the European Association of Plastics Converters (EuPC).

The Dynamic Tethers wave protection system incorporates hybrid polymer mooring components to control the motion, substantially reduces mooring loads by up to 70%. It has the potential to significantly reduce mooring costs for fish farms and ocean energy. The taut leg design also reduces seabed damage from movement of conventional mooring chains.

Our initial product has been successfully demonstrated in the challenging sea environment on Ireland’s Atlantic Coast, over the past 15 months. Our Dynamic tethers have performed excellently, minimising the loads and keeping the moored structure protected, particularly during the recent succession of severe storms. We will shortly be announcing a project to deliver our Tethers to manage mooring loads of up to 500 tonnes for a tidal energy developer.”
