DuPont Introduces Three New Engineering Plastic Resin Grades

New Resins Ideal for Smartphone and Laptop Applications and other Consumer Electronics


DuPont Performance Material recently introduced three new engineering plastic resin grades for use primarily in the consumer electronics field.  The new resins compliment a broad and growing portfolio of important solutions for the consumer electronics devices market.

                        DuPont continues to be a world leader in the science of engineering plastics, delivering trusted products and differentiated performance to its customers across multiple industries. The three new grades introduced by DuPont highlight the company’s strong capabilities in polymer technology, advanced formulation development ability, and expertise in CAE (short for “Computer Aided Engineering”) and tool design.  “With these integrated capabilities, we enable industry designers to develop new products from design concept through to commercialization, thus giving shape to smarter ideas,” says DuPont AP technology manager Woong Chung.

The three new grades are:

  • Zytel® HTN 55G55TLW: A high temperature polyamide grade that features superior mechanical strength performance in order to meet toughness requirements for smart phones and gaming consoles.  “The uniqueness of this grade is its superior balance of strength, stiffness and toughness,” says Chung.  “This product represents the best of all worlds – it’s a stiff higher modulus resin that still retains high impact strength allowing customers to design durable products with low warpage even at elevated temperatures.”

  • Zytel® HTN FR55G55NHLW: Another high temperature polyamide grade, this time targeting metal replacement in laptop chassis frames.  “The all-plastic solution replaces metal allowing laptops to be nearly 20 percent thinner and lighter without compromising durability,” says Chung.

  • Hytrel® HTR 8813 BK: This copolyester thermoplastic elastomer also enables laptops to be sleeker, lighter and less expensive by replacing the conventional metal hard disc brackets. “DuPont’s expertise from component design to materials selection and production processes from tooling to injection molding, make us the ideal partner for design engineers,” says Chung.

The rapid development of these products was made possible by DuPont’s state-of-the-art China R&D Center which recently added a 450-tonne injection molding machine. The 33,000 square meter China R&D Center co-located with DuPont Shanghai Innovation Center, has an extensive array of hardware and tools as well as a  network of development experts to help support customers from the concept all the way through to production.
