Cold start is challenge for vehicles that run on 100 percent ethanol (E100) because E100 does not form a combustible vapor at cold temperatures. In an effort to improve the cold start performance and efficiency of E100 vehicles, Honda created a new fuel injector using DuPont™ Zytel® HTN resin for its ethanol-powered City and Fit cars in Brazil.
The Delphi Multitec® fuel injectors, overmolded with Zytel® HTN PPA, has an integrated heating device that rapidly heats ethanol fuel so it can evaporate and be ignited more efficiently in cold weather. Zytel® HTN was selected to overmold the component because it offers lower melt viscosity than competing PPA, which helps protect the sub-assembly during molding. It also offers better elongation than other PPAs to survive thermal cycling without stress cracking. The result: better cold starting for the cars and an industry “Most Innovative Use of Plastics” award for Honda, Delphi and DuPont from the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE®).

DuPont™ Zytel® HTN resin is a family of cost-effective polyamides with great thermal performance, sustained strength, and easy processability. Zytel® HTN can replace metal parts that must withstand high temperature tolerances (such as engine cooling, handheld devices, and non-halogenated connectors), while reducing total cost and weight by consolidating the number of parts used.
